ring up and check with the insurance??

How do i go about insuring a part that invalidates MOT, therefore invalidating insurance. :S I will ask tomorrow.

I was wondering if a sports cat would have the same effect, cant stand to have a shite sounding exhaust if its gonna end up tinny with a home made decat.

good point!!

erm, i don't know how to answer that!

"performance exhaust" ???;)

I think i screwed my chances of using that line when i got my ktec insured the other day, as they asked if I changed the cat too.

I cant afford kitekat, let alone sports cat, and decats are so cheap in comparison. I want mine to POP!!!:rasp:

On the subject of decats...

I always assumed a compete decat (as opposed to a sports cat) would not pass the MOT and therefor void your insurance.

I asked this question on the CTR forum and people were adament most insurance companies will accept a decat as a valid modification!?!?!?!

What if you could change the emissions output during a test, by changing fuelling?

Some insurance companies lump an aftermarket exhaust upgrade under the category "exhaust & manifold" section.. so that pretty much covers the lot...
If you find a friendly MOT tester, it'll pass no problem..

Quite an old trick....when I used to own my Renault 19 16v people on forus used to smash the internals/cells out of the cat with a broomhandle...nice and cheap but a bit crude!

Another question id like to know while on the subject? ive had my decat on my car about 8-9months now and the engine management like still has,nt come on so its registering that their isnt any fault with the emissions on the car but would you hazzard a guess that if i did get it tested for MOT that it would pass with flying colours being down to the light now coming on?

It might pass it might not. The light won't go on if the second senr isn't plugged in though.

I wonder how many people on that "My mate crashed his car" thread had a rant for not having an MOT but have decats!

Decats themselves are not illegal, so you could probably insure it OK. The truth is that it will probably put you above legal emmisions levels but having one fitted is only necessary from the factory - after that you can do what you like as long as emissions are OK.

Nope, there is no physical check for a cat as part of the MOT, its purely an emissions test and alot of cars will fail without the cat in place due to the stringent emissions on newer cars.

EVERY car after 1992 MUST have a CAT put on when built by the maufacturer, but it is not a legal reqwuirement for it to have that afterwards (if someone takes it off their car for example). There are stricter emission controls for cars after 1992 but if you can achieve that without using a cat sometimes.

I have a decat on ym 1.4 Clio (1996) but plan on just putting the CAT back on come MOT time.

True, u just need to be able to pass the "cat test" for emissions if your car is a uk one made after 92. Some cars can passthese stricter tests even without the cat, but doubt a 172/182 could :)
