could you reccomend a good book explaining how to use the camera properly, the instruction book does not give enough info for a novice.

the guide must mention how the creative modes work? its just a case of read and go out and try... however if you want to understand ISO, DoF, Apateur (f/number), shutter speed etc etc google is your best bet
