Mines the same. Been in touch with Sony and good luck if you want them to fix it "The fan is supposed to do that, It will get louder if the system is hotter"..."yes but surely it should return to normal when just idling on the start XMB screen"..."the fan is supposed to do that". About as much use as a chocolate fire-guard.
There is an ongoing thread on their forums with quite a few people having this issue and them refusing to replace the unit. Sometimes they do replace them however a few people have just ended up getting refurbished systems which are just as bad.
Just put it somewhere better ventilated and colder and it should be a bit better. But the fans do get ridiculously loud when they come on and they don't seem to enjoy turning off. Laying it flat also helps to keep it cooler apparently.
I moved mine to a different location and it has stopped it for the most part which is fine as it was a pain in the arse watching movies with it sounding like a jet engine. It makes the 360 seem silent by comparison.
On the other side, I've never heard my 360 for the game I'm playing or film I'm watching... And I've only had a red light when I've managed to pull the AV cable out by mistake!
