FAQ: Is my dephaser pulley on it's way out?

  Liquid Yellow 182 FF
If you car sounds like this then it will be your dephaser pulley. Had it replaced today with a new cambelt and aux, sounds nice and healthy now and seems to pull alot better.

Thank the lord for that video and you for posting it. That rattle has been getting on my swede for the past few weeks. My missus will be well impressed that I wont be calling her outside asking her to pump the peddle whilst sticking my ear on the engine!

Great thanks

Hi Guys,

was panicking over mine having this issue, however it sounds nothing like a diesel / tank / moped all in one, had it checked and conclusion came to was if the noise you have is on idle only and more like a "gentle" knock or tap then unfortunately could be the manifold gasket, anyone with an X series vauxhall engine will most definitely have had this ion their lives

Think my dephaser is on the way out as it sounds like the first video but it sounds like the noise is coming from the top middle of the engine :S

Could someone confirm if it does indeed look like my dephaser is playing up. Gutted if it is as the Cambelt and Aux was only changed last year, such a div for not getting it done at the same time

I would say thats the dephaser without a doubt.

Cheers for replying MarcR.
It seems to me that's what it is too but oddly the noise doesn't seem to go as I increase the revs to 2000 which I thought it was supposed to do when the dephaser is playing up

Anyway, I will be getting this booked in with a specialist soon

Mine makes the classic diesel rattle sound but recently it's started to squeak loudly as well? Is this bad lol.

I left mine for so so long and it ended up running like a bag of rubbish.

If you can best to get the dephaser done ASAP as it can mess the timing up as its not locking (I may be wrong on this)

Once i got mine done the car ran so much better and felt alot faster

Lol I think mine is messing with the timing to it sometimes dies as soon as I start it.

Hello Rs guys! We just finish to rebuilt the complete engine. It started well, but when is reaching temperature about 70 deg noise start al top, sounds like the above videos but before dissasembly i want to double check, im in doubt because when is cold is soft.
Other think that makes us to doubt is that the dehpaser was ok before dissasembly.
Can be the hydraulic lifters?
It is possible to block the dephaser, and if is possible, should be the timing be at 16 deg cranck advance right?

Thanks for the help

Regards

Typical dephaser sound, change it.
Today we built and installed a fixed pulley, and noise is gone.
We installed at 10 deg advance, and of course engine becomes unstable typical like increased overlap.
We dissasembled the dephaser and is without any wear that is the problem.
We detected some wear at cam front bearing, cam is 0.07mm less diameter and we didnt meassure head but should have 0.05mm.
We tested the solenoid and works properly.
We are looking to find some oil leak that makes the dont have enought pressure to keep stiff at one position.
Noise only start at temperature when oil pressure drop below 1.5 bar at idle.

Will send dephaser pictures later.
Thanks

The internet told me this was 💯 the Dephaser but it wasn’t. Turned out to be valve guides. Better to find a garage that deals in Renault and pay them a few quid to inspect it properly.
