Across the back of the pad if I have read correctly. I have never personally fitted any so I may be wrong though!
You have to file (I used a mini grinder, much quicker) the ends off about 2mm. per end or just enough so they drop in to the caliper. You may also find they still wont fit in due to a shoulder moulded in the caliper at the piston side, again more grinding is reqd. on the chamfers either side of the spring fitted to the pad.

if you remove the shims, you only need to file a little off either end. basically enough to go through the paint and a little bit more.

still too tight though, you need to file the paint off or they will stick as soon as they get hot

Odd, i havent noticed that with any of the sets ive fitted. Mind you, thats only 5 sets, you've probably done hundreds lol
Must be the luck of the draw ...
Space does get tighter in the caliper when fitting new discs and pads. If you are fitting just the pads the the of the pad shouldn't need filing, just file the ends in that case.

Odds are they'll stick when hot. People don't grind them down for the fun of it!
Had to file quite abit off mine just to get them to sit in the carriers even with the shims removed. Had to take even more off due to them binding once the backing plate expands due to heat. Still get abit of squealing under very light braking.

you MUST have clearance, ie the pad must be able to move in the carrier (1mm is what i allow for expansion)
GreenStuff is alot worse than standard pads. When I took the GreenStuff pads off mine, the material fell off the backing plate. I found they weren't to bad at 1st but once they started getting hot, it didn't take them long to fade and that wasn't track work either.
