never understood why you would need an alternative firewall.
Windows firewall is the best there is TBH.
i aint ran antivirus software for over 2 years now, just windows firewall, 0 problems.

you can use a firewall to stop different connections say, to restrict certain programs from accessing the internet
I don't use an active anti virus, however, just by loading up the msn homepage after a fresh install of windows and then running a virus scanner, you already have 1 piece of malware

I just run the standard Windows Firewall but have SPYBOT on too (used to use AVG but it slowed the pc down)
