front number plates... THE LAW?

wats the law on front numberplates? do u HAVE to have them? if so wats te minimal size requirments? can they go anywhere on the front of a car etc etc?

yes you have to have them, and visible at all times, think they must also be fully legible to speed cameras, but not sure on that

as for size, not a clue, there are restrictions, but i can't recall what

Just covered this at college today!!

Basically the letters/numbers must be standard UK size. All number plate manufacturer have to use the same size when making road legal plates so as long as they're made by professionals you'll be alright.

And yes you must have one. Doesn't have to be central (alfas...) only thing I'm not 100% certain on is the legality of square plates although as far as know as long as the letters and numbers are the correct size you should be ok.

Other than that all the regular things apply:

White, Black letters, No background logos, and remember the new regulations that you can only have a UK/EU/Eng/Sco/Wal/NIr flag on the left and no football emblems or playboy bunny signs (if thats your thing) where they should be.

Hope that helps.

If ur lucky enough to have an imported car that was produced before 1997, you can have the smaller lettering on the front plates ( half-sized plates ) ... buuuuuuut, my evo hasn't arrived yet.... :p

i want some new plates with the ranult logo , looks nice

but cops round here are arses and are too fussy , they`ve allready pulling ppl then see if the inductions kits etc are on there insurence policy

Yeah, unfortunately no renault logo allowed. Basically what could happen to you if you had one is that you will get a Vehicle Defect Rectification Form (VDRF) which states what is wrong with your car and tells you to get it fixed. If you don't then you can be taken to court.

As for akira's suggestion on the smaller number plates there are no exceptions for cars that are to be registered here permanently (not sure how long is currently classed as permanent but I think it's 1 year) except for cars registered before 1st Jan 1973 which can have the black and silver plates. Unless you can direct me to the legislation which proves me wrong.

Which force is your mum in Freebone?

oh dam thats what i have...better not tell my mum bout that new law then as she's a cop

Err, I thought cops should know the law... ;)

Plates should also have the 'BS' standard and the postcode of the place they were made on the bottom of them, AFAIK. I asked for this NOT to be on my plates and got 'ALLY' in tiny letters on the bottom of the plate instead, and the plates arrived with a 'Not road legal' sticker on the back off them, lol. Legal UK font and spacing too.

And 3D font is allowed too, so long as it's using the official UK font.

I thought 3D lettering was made illegal about a year ago?
