Fuel filter location

hi lads, does anyone know where the fuel filter is located, i was told it was underneath the rear seat, but all i can find is the access to the fuel tank/fuelpump, is the fuel filter outside the tank or inside the tank in cylinder form or is it meshing round the fuel pump, would be great if some one could tell me this.

Its inside the tank . Its supposed to be good for around 145,000 miles

Its fine officialy for 150k no need to ever chnage it on some of the early 172's its under the car seperate on most its built ito the pump and senssor unit under the seats.

mines the built in one by the look of it, so i take it youve got buy the fuel gauge sender unit all in one and cant buy a new filter for it.
