Garmin Streetpilot i3

  Fabia vRS
can't you download it from www.garmin.com??

Saw the i3 in Maplin yesterday, the unit had power, so I was able to have a little play, the bloke told me it came with a MAPLIN issue only CD with the camera locations to load on your pc, then transfer to the i3.

boi, do you know how often the camera locations are refreshed, and what web site you can get them from for the i3?? What sort of warning does the i3 give, is it all beeps and flashing lights??

I guess there is a current speed readout from the i3 and compass bearing etc?? If you're not using the satnav facility, does it just show a map of the roads you are driving, without verabl directions etc??

Check out www.lordpercy.com for more info on satnavs/safety camera locating devices!!

I get my camera location from HERE. Also the sort of warning it gives you is a bleep (a few times!), and the screen flashes red. At the top of the screen it tells you what kinda cam it is, with speed limit. Shows you a small icon on your screen (to where/what cam it is), plus it picks up on Traffic light cams. My snooper S4 Neo doesn't pick up on Traffic light cams tho, which was a bit dissapointing.

There is also a current speed readout in the bottom left of the screen, and your direction (N, E, S, W, etc...) on the bottom right. It also shows you 3 different kinds of mapping (3D is my fave). You can zoom in or out, I prefer to zoom in all the way, so you can see what is ahead on the road. Also you can have the Garmin unit on, showing you the map WITHOUT the verbal directions. So it kinda acts like a speed cam detector at the same time. Very simple to use, and simple to install.

I got no faults with it at all. My better than that Navman I had last week, that was cr@p IMO. As you couldn't load POI's on it, didn't have 3D mapping, didn't have Day/Night mapping, couldn't zoom in, etc...

Got any other questions about the Garmin, just ask

excellent thanks for poisting up the link - my mum has the i3 put i use it more than her, so i was thinkig of adding the speed camera bit to it.

How do download it to the unit ?

I was thinking of getting a Road Angel Compact in the next couple of weeks, is it better to just buy the i3 then? What features does the RA have that i wouldn't get on the i3? An extra £20 for the i3 with the benefit of SatNav seems to good to pass up on!

Exactly mate!
It's like I need to prove that the i3 is gonna be the better unit foir everyday driving, cos most of where I drive I know the roads, but perhaps cos I haven't driven them for a while, they have roadworks mobile cams or new fixed camera sites.

Lee boi, cheers for the comprehensive response above.

How much does it cost to upload the updated maps to the Garmin?
Don't know is HAS knows of any pitfalls with the Garmin camera info, my main reason for looking at it now is cos it's a similar price to the RA compact as Shaun says.

Road Angel has locations for GATSO, TRUVELO, SPECS, WATCHMAN, SPEEDCURB, TRAFFIPHOT, SPEEDMASTER and accident/safety blackspots and school locations, as well as congestion charging zone.

I thought I'd seen (maybe on Lord Percy) that the free camera info for the garmin doesn't include all the above listed types of camera.

I'm not talking either unit down, just trying to get the best idea of what I should be purchasing for everyday use.

Ok, you need 2 things.

1) You need to download the POI Loader from there. Install the program on your computer, very simple.

2) You then need to download the camera file from HERE (look for the black box saying: 'Garmin POI Loader - Download the Database' Once you have downloaded that, unzip the file. Then open your POI program, hook your Streetpilot i3 up with the USB lead. Then follow the instructions on the program. Literally takes seconds to upload the datebase from you computer to Streetpilot i3

Then stick it in your car, and have a drive about to spots where you know cams are. The alert looks similar to the photo below, but on my screen the speed is on the bottom left of the screen. But looks similar anyhow!

just found this info too...
http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/readerreview.php?reviewId=1249

Review: I recently purchased a Garmin i3 as an "early Christmas present" for myself and as a complete novice to GPS systems I found the unit quite incredible! It is usable straight from the box and easy to operate. Although the screen is small, it is very clear and accurate and in auto mode switches from a daytime view to night time. This reduces the brightness as if driving in a "full moon" environment. Excellent for safe night driving! The voice directions are also very clear for such a small unit. Come to think of it, if the screen was any bigger it would distract from your driving. Anyway the directions are so clear and accurate you only need to look at the screen as a last resort. Should you miss a turn then the i3 re-calculates your route within seconds and puts you back on track. I compare this unit with that of a mobile phone. What do you want it to do? Most of these modern gadgets have facilities you never use. The i3 gets you from A to B with no fuss. You can easily customise the unit to suit and you can download POI (points of interest) for free. Most of the GPS units on the market are nearly double the price so the i3 is real value for money. I will recommend this great little unit for the first time buyer and give it 10 out of 10. Well done Garmin.

Yup, that's very true what that person said. I love my little Street Pilot i3

Also, I recommend anyone who has recently bought one of these units to update the software version. As mine on the unit was v.2.50, while the newest sofeware is v.2.70 which can be found HERE

I am getting to like my Street Pilot i3 the more I use it.

I noticed today something more about the Cams POI.

For example, if you are driving and approaching a cam, then your unit will bleep (tell you the limit, and flash red). However it doesn't show you where the cam/location is on the screen, it ONLY shows the cam/location on the screen if you are going over the speed limit. If you are going over the limit, the unit will bleep continually until you slow down to the speed limit. Also when you are going over the speed limit a little icon will show (like these:
pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.gif
,
pocketgps_uk_gatso_50.gif
,
pocketgps_uk_gatso_70.gif
[Gatso's],
pocketgps_uk_mobile_30.gif
[Mobile Van],
pocketgps_uk_redlight.gif
[Red Light], etc...) If you slow down, the icon then goes off your screen. So then you have an idea to where the location is, if you are not too sure of the area.

It points out where the Cam Vans are (even if they are not there), Red light cams, and all other speed cams. While my Snooper S4 DIDN'T point out all Cam Van locations, nor it DIDN'T ever point out Red lights cams. So overall, I am very happy.

Snooper S4 is now on eBay, for sale. As I not longer require it!

So the Garmin i3 is definitely a worthwhile buy? I was going to originally get myself a Road Pilot cos my dads is great and then buy a sat nav on top but the i3 sounds like it has it all. I understand it's not an actual camera detector but if u update the POI's enough it should stay on top of the most common camera locations right? Also, how accurate is the speedometer on it? As I am about to fit new rims on my car and it may throw the speedo so a GPS speedo could be useful! Thanks!
Dan.

I've heard that by uploading some POI's, especially the Camere locations, this can cause the i3 to jam frequently so that you need to turn it off and back on, anyone who's got one had this happen?

  CLIOpatra, L22EE W™
If you keep the POI's updated, then you will be fine for the cam locations.

As for the speedometer, it's gonna be pretty accurate, because you speed is based on the satellites up above. Also the speedometer on the Clio is out say about 2-3 MPH. As I drove past a Gatso months ago, the neddle was on about 33MPH. But if I got my Garmin i3 on, and am travelling 33MPH (according to car speedometer) the display on the Garmin i3 is only 30MPH.

Also the Garmin i3 picks out all the locations to where mobile cams are. On the other hand my Snooper S4 didn't do this (even tho is states it does). The reason I know this is because when driving around Bristol/Bath the Garmin goes off at all mobile locations. Infact there are some locations that I didn't even knowthat where mobile cams operate. While the Snooper was mostly silent on mobile locations (which is poor!), but always went off on the Gasto's.

So I would defo recommend a Garmin i3 - 101%

Never happened to me.

The unit only jammed once, and that was when I was INDOORS messing about with the settings, while it was connected to my Laptop.

Ive been mentioning this unit now for some time and people didnt seem to listen to the fact that your getting a sat nav unit and a gps gatso locator for less money than a road angel! Even though you get the built in radar detector with the road angel its not worth the extra money for my mind! There is also talk now that garmin will release the latest map update to existing customers (from v7 up to v8 mapping). If this becomes the case then you cant knock the after care customer service garmin are offering.

Now that is good customer service.

Snooper want £4.95 per month for updates. I cancelled my DD with them as I will no longer be using the snooper.

Looks like the i3 has made it to the top of my xmas pressie list then!

Cheers for the advice, always good to speak to someone who knows about it first-hand

Picked up an i3 today and no complaints at all so far! 169.99 and it's easy as pie to use and looks cool too. Just deciding the best place to put it - think I'm gonna put it to the left of my clock on the HUD. A couple of questions tho. I've tried to register my product on the site on the net but don't have a registration code - where can I find this? Anyone registered one?

Also when it comes to POI updates - so far I've updated the software on the system to the 2.70 is it? It came with 2.50. And I have the POI software downloaded and installed but I'm confused which POI file is most upto date with speed cam locations etc. Can someone add the links to the the one's I need with the most up-to date info? Thanks!
Dan.

Ok,

I haven't registered my Garmin yet, didn't even know you could. Perhaps I didn't read that bit in the pack.

As for the software on the Garmin, the version installed on the unit when you buy is it 2.50, however the latest software is 2.70. Which I can see you have already updated.

Finally the POI's files:

You can get the latest cam locations --> HERE

You can get the latest POI's --> HERE (which was updated 21st Nov, so I will be putting that on my Garmin now!)

BEFORE downloading the files, this is what I have done. In my documents, I have created a folder called 'Garmin' this is the folder where I download the Cam lcations and POI's too (Clicky!!). Also in the 'Garmin' folder, make another folder called 'POI's' (Clicky!!) Once the files have downloaded, upzip them, and unzip the contents to the 'POI's' folder you created earlier. Make sure that you unzip the Cam locations AND the POI's to the POI's folder, make sure you do this. Reason being is because I loaded the Cam location on the Garmin all fine, then a few days later I loaded the POI's on the Garmin, but it wiped all the Cam locations off. Because I installed the Cam locations/POI's from 2 different folders on the computer. Connect your Garmin to your PC, and open the POI loader. When the POI loader has opened, click 'Next', then browse for the 'POI' folder, within the 'Garmin' folder which is located in 'My Documents' (Clicky!!). Then select your units for distance and speed, then click on 'next' at the bottom. Wait a few seconds, then your POI loader should look something like this --> Clicky!!

After you have done all that go to your Garmin unit. Select 'Where To?', then select 'Food' Hotels, and More,' then select 'Custom Points,' thenyou should see ALL the Cam loactions and POI's you just uploaded onto the Garmin.

Hopefully that should sort it out for ya, if not let me know.

Think its also worth mentioning to anyone with the heat reflecting screens eg the 182. That if you place the i3 unit close enough to the small transparent panel within the screen, the unit will work! there's no need for an external arial if you persivere with it. My unit picks up no problem. Bet that cant be said for most other units. I know that it not the case for the i3's bigger brother the c320 cause ive tried it with my dads unit and it struggles with signal.

I was meant to try that on my Mum's 172 y'day, but bloody forgot. But it's good to hear that it picks up on the signal fine.

I'm going to update my mums one for her (I bet I feck it up) it all goes well I will prob get one myself (or just carry on nicking hers, as i seem to use it more than she does lol )

This is also very useful information I just found on this site: http://www.maft.co.uk/garmin/submit.htm

How to make and submit your own POI's:

Unfortunately there's no way (without buying a program such as Mapsource) to get the longitude/latitude from any saved points on the i3, however:

If you can find it on a map then things are quite easy! Go to streetmap.co.uk and find it on a map. Zoom in as much as possible and click the actual location (entrance to car park probably best bet) and it will show an arrow on the map. Now, near the bottom of the page there is a link to 'click here to convert/measure coordinates' - click the link and in the list it will show you the latitude and longitude. You can then add these to the csv file (in the relevant columns) and email the longitude, latitude and name (eg Tesco - Wakefield) and I will add it to the relevant file.

If you spot an error in a POI file, for example the location is actually slightly wrong then find the correct location as above and let me know which item is being changed and the new details.

Send any submissions or amendments to: mail@maft.co.uk with the heading "i3 POI Submission"

Now this is very useful if you want to make your own POI's, and it DOES work. As I just got the Lat: (51.5274) Lon: (-2.6032) from Multimap for a Morrisons Supermarket, saved the .csv file, and uploaded. Checked Garmin unit, and the location was there. So brill IMO!!

yeah that is useful... if you enter POI's (i have for some mates houses) by entering it on the unit itself, the next time you update POIs they get wiped off!!!! and you loose people's addresses

with that method you can just make a CSV file on your computer full of addresses then never loose them :D

Purchased an i3 yesterday for my birthday, got it from Comet for £169.99, plus the external aerial for £21.99 (my Alize has got the heat reflecting screen)
Was well pleased with the price, especially as in Autocar last week the Garmin advert said that it would be for £199.99 til 31 Dec, then going to it's normal selling price of £294.95 after that.

Very pleased so far, was a bit disappointed that it doesn't have a road on (New A120 d'carriageway between Stansted airport and Braintree) that has been open over a year though. Hopefully they will update the mapping like mja182 said.

have upgraded the software and installed poi's on it-looking forward to trying out the camera locations etc. Do they all come with the 256MB transflash card?

They do a carry case for it, but it looks like a monster to carry around, they could do with making a body glove case or similar for it I reckon.

  vx220
Yeah they all come with a 256 transflash card tht im aware of anyway! You should have tried the unit without the aerial first to see if you could of got a signal cause i dont have any problems in my 182 aslong as your directly below the transparent patch of the screen.
We will have to keep our fingers crossed for the free v8 mapping update! Its like most things in life though they dont remain valid for ever such as paper maps etc, but u can only hope they offer the update either free or at a low cost seein tht the unit has not been launched for very long.

  Renault Clio 197 ('08)
My i3's still going great! I'm sure we will get a map update for free or very low cost! I got a Kwik-Save leaflet through my door this evening - i3's for 164.99!! Cheaper still! Madness!
On the camera POI's - when I come upto a 40mph it usually says something like 25mph speed alert, what's this refering to then?

  vx220
u need to make a note of the identification number which flashes up! Then go into the camera csv file and edit the file in excel by finding the camera which you are referring to and altering the speed indicated for tht camera reference. Its just a simple change to make you can even alter the proximity at which the alert comes up.
