i am a new member,i have just bought a 172 mk1, and when looking for info on car, found this site, and you all seem like a good bunch, so i became a member (you also have some good discounts).

yeh mate as above...its very easy i done with no experience in 10 minutes...get get a hacksaw to it...

I know the problem youre having. Basically (according to my local Renault garage) they ram the exsisting gear knob on....hence the reason why its so hard to get off. The best thing to do....I found....is to get a mole-rench (youll need virtually the largest grip diameter possible) secure that around the gear knob....with the handles sticking in the air. Then take a hammer and smack the gear knob from the underside........hitting the grips of the mole-rench. After a number of goes...the knob will just pop off.

Hope this helps

The gear nob twists off, its a .35 thread and they are glued on, I have posted the proces on Dr Bs original request. You basically move the stick cover up, remove the wine shift split cotter pin, moul grips round the shaft (use cardboard as to not damage the shaft), rather large pair of stillsons on the gear know and apply pressure very slowly, it will come off - trust me Ive taken off two on my own 172s and 3 mates. No point taking a hack saw to it as it only makes mess, hitting it only damages the nylon bush in the rose join. Laters......
