I had loads of play in my gearbox on my 172 cup, and when dropping out the revs in 2nd i would get a clunk, i replaced the dog bone mount for a ktr uprated one and the gearbox is sweet now lots tighter and no clunk in 2nd gear anymore, so if your prob is similar the bushes in the dog bone mount probably want replacing.
I had loads in my DCI, changes all engine mounts with brand new genuine and it was better but still doing it, I was stumped as they were pretty tight when brand new.
changed the worn track rod and track rod ends and it stopped, there was that much play in them that's what was causing it lol!!
