Gearbox blew up then developed misfire! PLEASE HELP!

  Clio 182 Blue
Well guys the worst has happened...

A couple weeks ago I posted about an oil leak, thought it was engine oil but due to the water on the road at the time i struggled to tell, took it to the garage, they recommended i keep an eye on the engine oil which i have done.

But then yesterday
while driving happily down the motor way, BANG! stick pops out of fifth, put it back in to find an oh-mighty wine... Took it straight to the garage, on the way to the garage the clio developed a misfire! There is apparently a large hole in the gearbox not on the bell end (<-Excuse that!) but body side.

The two must be linked but I cannot work out how, the garage replaced my plugs (to my freaking expense even though i knew it would do nothing!).

So currently trying to find a new gearbox, leaving the misfire issue for now hoping it's a crank sensor or something. I've been quoted £200 labour £80 for a new clutch (might aswell) but i need to source my own gearbox. I live in Cardiff.

Can someone advise me of the gearbox part number, it's a 2004 182, non-Cup. Also does anybody have a theory on where this misfire came from?

Yep that's the one, only old 172s and Cups without abs have the speedo drive.

Although both will work in your car, but the 130 has the bolted in circlip,
so it's a slightly better design.

When mine blew up I replaced it with a 130.

Cheers buddy :) In your opinion is £200 labour reasonable?

  Trophy Turbo :)
Id say that price is not bad for a garage. i would be replacing your clutch when its all to bits and shoulndt cost any more money labour wise

I completely agree, they've quoted me £80 for a clutch ontop and will give me a years warranty on it.

Looking at £680 complete job then :( -still have the misfire issue though, does anybody have any theories?

Cheers guys

God knows, that's where my knowledge ends mate, crank sensor maybe.

Also it might be worth considering getting powerflex bushes for the dogbone mount,
cheap upgrade but well worth it.

You're selling your car because the gearbox blew up?
£200 odd quid will get you a second hand box, £100ish new clutch,
then £200ish for the labour, unless you can get someone off here to do it for beer.

The gearboxes are a known weak point, we've all had them go wrong at some point,
just fix it and enjoy the car.

I don't fancy your chances of getting much money for it needs all that doing to it,
better to fix it then sell it, or just carry on driving it.

I will admit I panicked slightly and wapped the clio on ebay. I'm now investigating boxes but if the right price comes along. Eitherway.

If you've got nothing to drive buy a £300 quid Mondeo with 12 months mot
and moth ball the Clio for a bit until you have the parts and money to fix it.

labour is very cheap, they must not know what a dick of a job it is. I wouldn't do it for that.

Clutch is WAY too cheap and will be crap. Probably so crap is slips from day 1. a Valeo or LUK clutch will be about £130 and you shouldn't use anything else.
Don't forget you need oil too, which is about £30 for the right stuff.

I charge £450 for a clutch change or box swap inc clutch and oil for reference, and that's quite competative

as above labour is cheap although i paid far less than that in labour but then i ended up having to spend more in the long run as they f**ked my sump which Dan at 519 had the lovely job of fixing.. the joys of not being near any specialists when your box goes bang.. as for the clutch pffft wouldn't touch it i paid 140 for a valeo clutch kit alone

Well I had a change of heart and managed to source myself a 50k 182 gearbox for £120. Went back to the garage that said they would fit it, they turned around with an extortionate price of £535, because apparently to fit a clutch requires so much more work... I know the clutch has to be swapped anyway, i argued and aruged with no luck. Sooo Back to the drawing board a bit, i have the gearbox, going to buy a clutch (any recommendations?)..

..And well fit them myself. Unless anybody knows of a garage in cardiff that will do it for less?

Is there a guide on how to swap a gearbox in the guides section, I'll join up if there is, trying to budget as much as possible at the moment.

Misfire fixed, turned out the orginial plugs were on the car, just coincidence they go at the same time.

Any further advice would be highly appreciated guys :D cheers!

Sign up, there's a guide by BenP. It's a bit of a pig of a job, but nothing that's out of reach. Mine went a few years back so i did it on the driveway, having never done one before. Done about 15 now, lol.

My record time for a box and clutch swap is 3hr 45mins.. Book time is 6-7 hours I think..

Re: which clutch, use a Valeo, Sachs or LUK only. Anything else is going to be pony.

So my £450 all in looks more attractive now ;)

They've simply realised how badly they underquoted, that's all. Be glad they upped the price before the work was done. Pretty honest of them IMO.
You won't get it done for peanuts. Beware of the "do it yourself" advice unless you're handy, you wouldn't be the first to start and never get the car running, or having it in bits for several weeks. It's really only a pig because of the subframe having to come off, and the PAS lines dominating the engine bay

£460's not so bad,
and to think you thought the world was ending when it blew up. lol ;)

Told it's not that bad, all JC5s blow up at some point, we've all been through it.

Has it been swapped yet?
