Gearbox help please

  172 A Cupwork Orange™
my gearbox grinds when putting it in reverse only when the car is not moving, however if i put it in 1st then select reverve its smooth as a babys bum no grinding, i took the car in the dealership where i purchased it from this eve due to aux belt slipping and squeeling and mentioned the gearbox, the service manager told me it was normal to gind when selecting reverse, i have a 2003 172 cup with 28000 miles on the clock
is this normal do any other people have the same prob is the service guy just pulling my pants down and trying to shaft me is basicly the question i have.. or is this as he says normal

regards

Well i don't know about the clio gearbox, but i remember gearboxes i had in older cars had no synchro on the reverse gear, so to get a smooth engagement you would have to select a forward gear to slow the gearbox shafts down then reverse gear would just slot in nicely.

Mines always been difficult to select reverse :( Not sure what it is though. I've tried doing it so many different ways aswell lol Slowly, Slamming it in! letting the reverse catch thing down when I've moved the gear stick to the left.
