Gearbox maintaince

im very worried about my gearbox expireing, what should i be doing in terms of maintainance/servicing, im sure i saw in the haynes manual that changing the gearbox oil is one of the few five spanner difficulty rated jobs, can anyone help me because i want to at least check the condition of my gearbox oil as i doudt it has ever been changed, if it makes any differnce i may be able to get it over a pit for level access and inspection,

The gear box oil is easy to change especially with an induction kit fitted, just remove the plastic guard from underneath the gearbox, undo the drain plug, refit and fill through the hole at the front.
It is not rated in the haynes manual as it is not part of the service schedule.
