gearbox oil low?

  Italian 3.2 V6
is there any signs?

I'm assuming the gear box oil is seperate and different to engine oil?

  Clio 1.2
You can check the level, unscrew the filler bung and pop your finger, if it fits into there, if not, bend a cable tie and use it as a dipstick? The level should be.. level with the actual filler bung hole.

  Ph1 track 172
the filler hole is tiny lol,
not enough room for a finger,
and i doubt a cable tie is going to give you good refrence,

on the other hand,
unless its leaked out, its in there,

gearboxes dont need that much oil,
i lost most of mine, and it still drove to the garage fine,

only sign is when its too low,
the car wont go into gear basically,

if in doubt, just have it changed, 2 second job mate

ok thanks guys, just ino one of my gearbox seals have gone and usually wen droping gears its although it doesnt feel as lubricant as it should, some times feels like it clanking and crunching ever so slighty? :S

  Lots of Alfas
To check the level you have to take the filler off and pour it in until it pours out the hole. Castro 75w-85w gearbox oil is the one to use iirc.

I think it's worth saying the filler hole is the plastic white butterly screw on the side, not the hole on the top with the breather on it.

Had my gearbox oil changed before christmas, you can keep your panel filters, decats and bolt on tat, one of the best value mods you can make on an rs clio and you will see the improvement.

lol! Right hand side of the engine mate, It bolts to the side of the block, If you look on it you'll see a plastic screw which you can undo by hand.. not sure where it is on the RS's but its normally at the front of the gearbox. Undo that and pour gear oil till it starts coming out then stop, thats how you know the level, oh and make sure its parked on a level surface when you're doing it.

right if your looking at the engine from the front, move to the passenger side of the car, to the gearbox, (you may have to remove your airbox if you cant fit your hand down) and sticking out the front of the gearbox (ie facing towards the front of the car- pointing at the radiator) there will be a plastic butterfly bolt, undo this and put your little finger in the hole, and try to feel for the oil level, if its to the correct level it should be level with the hole

and to refill get a tube, poke it into the hole, and put a funnel in the top of the tube, and pour in, keep pulling the pipe out, as soon as the oil level reaches the hole it will start to run out, that will be full, so simply put the butterfly screw back in

ok thanks guys, will go have a look in a min. if no luck i will be back for pics to get to the end of this lol. and the correct oil to refil it if not full is Castro 75w-85w, right?

Signs the box may need topping up are varied can be it won't go inot 5th or jumps out a lot can be a noisy box can be stiff etc

i'd recomend topping up ever service and change with the cambelt time for most adverage driven cars and twise as often on cars which have harder lives

^^ PMSL. Better gear oil makes the gears spin so much quicker ;)

Lol, tbh the gearbox is a complete sack of s**t in the RS clios, bearing in mind Renault say the oil never needs changing you would be amazed the amount of difference a gearbox oil change makes after 65k. Its still a s**t gearbox but it feels alot smoother now and makes the car more enjoyable to drive.

Think ill get mine changed in June when the car gets serviced, sounds like its well worth while tbh
