gearbox rebuilds..

  340i
Right, just preparing for the worst here!

Looking at potentially rebuilding the gear box as I am getting a bad whining from the differential...

After a quick search on the internet, I've found this "full" re-build kit:

http://www.transmission-rebuild-kits.co.uk/renault-gearbox-rebuild-p-139.html?cPath=87_127

I am sure with some looking around a better price can be found (this was the first website I looked at!), any recommendations guys?

Now that only looks like seals and bearings, is that the "full" rebuild kit, i.e. syncromeshes, all seals, all bearings? or would these need to be sourced from another supplier?

If I am taking the box out and stripping it down, I would rather change all serviceable parts while its in pieces :)

Would it not work out cheaper to just buy a new box off a low milage RS Gray?

I'm just thinking by the time you have messed around with the kit/labour etc you could have picked a new box up and saved yourself the hassle.

Sorted Jays car, and a number of my customers so far. Can't fault the work, price or turnaround.

A full rebuild with change of all syncros and all bearings will be hell I can assure you. Lots of special tools needed and you will need to "shim" the bearing play all over again. I have done a few of these boxes fitting LSD's and I say if you dont have ALL the tools and skills to do it leave it to a specialist. Taking it a part and fitting a LSD is one thing a complete overhaul is a completley different story.

We never thought it was going to be worth it, but when i destroyed the diff at Croft last year we decided to bite the bullet.

I believe its one of the best things weve done to ours (ofcourse the suspension and whole package of the car is good)
But the diff has completely changed how you can drive the car.

We have Croft on the 31st and it will be the first time weve been to Croft since last year so it should be fun pulling out of the tight hairpin.

This.

The guy received the box and had it rebuilt with new seals and bearings by the next day! Was £250 to get that done which isn't too bad I thought.

Send it to a proper gearbox specialist Gray, as mentioned above. Any handy man could have a go but you need the right tools i.e a decent press, pullers etc.

Our place uses car/c.a.r in Mansfield, they normally turn stuff around in a couple of days and are spot on.

renault sell a rebuild kit..

last 172 box i rebuilt was a dream to drive, sooo chuffed when it went back in.

the boxes are pretty simple if you have had one to bits before. you need to keep ball bearings from dropping out when you dissasemble.
