Gearbox replacement rebuild options?

  Clio 182
I've now unfortunately got the famous 3rd gear crunch when I'm accelerating hard in my 182 track car. I've read around and people seem to either send them to be rebuilt or get a second hand one. I have a couple of questions I wondered whether anyone can help me with because I am not keen on getting a second hand one:

Is it possible to rebuild it yourself without very specialist tools and if so where is a good place to get parts from?

Does anyone make an aftermarket gearbox that is built to take a bit more abuse than the standard item?

Its pretty fiddly getting them apart without the right pullers etc but is is possible, how many gearboxes have you rebuilt before though? Cause unless you have someone showing you what you are doing its relatively likely it will go wrong the first time you try, and given the amount of hassle it is to get them in and out, it might make sense just to pay someone like Agency to do it properly for you.

I have built a few gearboxes since being taught how to do so, but I still hate it and I still lack confidence in doing it when its a new gearbox to me (ie different make etc) as they all have their own little peculiarities, so unless you intend on doing a few or just really enjoy learning about boxes, I wouldnt really consider it a DIY job.

There are no sensibly priced upgrade boxes available for these cars.

From my knowledge nobody makes an uprated gearbox unless you went for a sequential from a cup racer. You can pick up another gearbox relatively cheap on here.

  Cup In bits
Gripper can do a new gear set for them but they are out of stock just now.

There is an Italian company that do gearset's also, none of these two company's are cheap though and I would just have agency or any other g\box rebuilder recon your's and get a taller 5th gear while your at it (60bones) and be a bit kinder to the next one ;)

You are talking a few grand for one of the gearkits including the work to fit etc, and then its straight cut and hence horrible on the road, only really an option for a racer.

can you buy the cup sequential boxes anywhere new or second hand and do they bolt straight on?

The 172 cup racer sadev box will bolt straight onto the engine, totally unsuited to road use though, wont last many miles in traffic, fine for a pure trackday car though. You will have to make some mounts to fit as they mount differently.

Tend to be up for sale for about 5K ish secondhand from what I have seen.

Sounds like buying an updated one is out of my price range then..... So it's either rebuild it or get it rebuilt.

Ive never rebuilt one chip, built a few engines with my dad but never touched the innards of a gearbox so I am quite keen to learn but I just wondered whether you needed specialist tools. I might just give it a go and if I mess up take it to a pro to fix it lol

  Clio 182
Yeah I know what you're saying but its always the way I've learnt about stuff, just giving it a go ;)

  182/RS2/ Turbo/Mk1
That's the way I've learnt too. Give it a go so long as you are prepared for the fact you might have to pull it out again if when you try to drive up the road you find you have made a mistake.

Last one I took apart ( a very long time ago), I ended up giving it to an expert in a box. Not for me I'm afraid.

Lol, yeah I'm not saying its the easiest way to learn, but it is the best!

Ha ha, yeah this will probably be the same for me.

Thanks!

Take notice in that manual of the angle it says to have the box sat at to do things, if you just pull the two halves apart on the floor it all flies to bits like a jack in the box, lol

Another option is a manual dog box found on the mk2 European rally cars, although again not really suitable for road use.

Ha ha, thanks, I'll keep that in mind.

It gets trailered to the track so it doesn't need to work on the road but I just don't want to spend thousands. How much do they go for?

I think I'll pass then and give this rebuild ago..... Watch this space as I might be asking for advice on where is a good place to send a half disamantled broken gearbox lol
