Getting files from inaccessible OS!

My machine is now a dual boot. I used to have protected files on my NTFS drive, but because the XP system which it was accessed via has gone tits up...I want to get access to it all because I've got a lot of music and films that I still want access to. (both options in the dual boot load XP, but the original doesn't work, just keeps going back to the dual boot selection screen no matter whether I try and access via safe mode, etc).

I don't know Linux at all...how can I get my C: drive loaded up so I can access the protected folders without having to access it via the account that it was created on?

I've heard people mention about mounting a drive in Linux...but unsure how to do this and which version of Linux to use!

"Protected" as in encrypted via XP? If so, think your screwed, I lost aload of files I encrypted with XP, rebuild my machine forgetting about them and couldnt decrypt them with a new install.

Is the Linux install on the same HDD? If not the easyist thing to do if it was me would be to remove the HDD and plug it into another Windows OS machine and assuming the HDD/partitions are ok, just drag off what you want.

mount the hard drive in another computer and give your self rights to all the folders so you can copy off all the files.

try not to do it in Vista though as its a real pain with rights and permissions.

No, had an admin account, so Pword protected it and protected the drive so you could only access certain files from that account...now I can't open that OS to get the username/password in (that would be easy) and don't want to reinstall Windows over that one, as it will probably try and overwrite it, and if it didn't...then I probably still wouldn't be able to access the files as the NTFS perms would be for the old username/password!!!!
