going from 16" to 15"

  Clio 172 ph2
Hey,

I've got a 172 ph2 with the original 16" alloys. Lately thought about replacing them to a 15" lightweight (or very lightweight) aftermarket alloys.
there 2 things I'm concerned about:
1. fuel consumption.
2. performance

If the fuel consumption will increase in 5-10% then that's OK as long as the car will be quicker and more fun to drive. I guess the weight difference would be big.
I really don't care about the look of it. Only performance.
Anyone here have tried it? I searched a bit and didn't really find an answer.

** EDIT: another option is to switch to a lightweight 16".

Thanks!

Car won't be any quicker on 15's and mpg will go down a fraction according to some on here. Not enough to notice though.

And unless its lowered alot or on coilovers it will look broke

Why not? the car weight less and the front wheel are easier for turn (I'm just using common sense though :) )

theres not much difference in rolling radius from a 205/45 R16 to a 195/50 R15 tyre (most popular fit on each rim size usually) so there little difference from that perspective in terms of outright acceleration performance

however, the lighter 15's will reduce unsprung weight which should improve turn in and handling etc. and I prefer the feel of the car on 15's to 16's

also, as mentioned, phase 2's look a tad amusing on standard ride height and 15's

I havent noticed a difference in MPG going to 15" wheels. Does feel a bit better to drive, but then I only drive on public roads not tracks.

As mentioned you will need atleast a 30mm drop. I had prolines fitted when I first put them on, and I felt ashamed to be driving my car. Changed to Cooksports and it is just acceptable
