Good Freeview Recorders?

I've owned and used the Humax 9200TB since January this year. Great peace of kit.

160GB hard drive.
Record 2 channels while watching a 3rd.
Search function (search by program name if you don't know what channel / date / time it's on)

I paid £200, but I'm sure they are a lot cheaper now.

It's not really a poor mans Sky+ imo. Available in Silver (9200T) or Black (9200TB)

There's also a newer version that is a 9300 iirc.

I have a Topfield TF5800 & think its brilliant :). It has 2 tuners, so can record to different programmes at the same time + I can also watch a programme I have recorded as well :). I think Topfield has another newer recorder out now, but here's a link to a forum & info:

Also u can upload "Tools" to the Box and then install different things to make it more that bit more feature packed ftw.

I got a cheap signal boosted aerial from argos, plugs in to the socket, and then i've just run a power extension cable and a long co-ax cable up to the top of my wardrobe, 3 channels, bad signal to all channels good signal...

Whats the EPG like? is it responsive and can you manovure it quickly?

Thats what drives me insane, i do quite a bit of interface design etc at college, and slow and poorly designed interfaces kill me!

P.s i have this aerial at the moment....

very cheap but works, and these are probably better.

Once loaded it's quick and easy to navigate.

However, it does take aprox 10-15mins to fully show the entire EPG as the HUMAX doesn't store the EPG after it's been turned off or put on standby.

It downloads the entire EPG every time it's taken out of standby.

I have mine switch itself on every day at 7am (You can set this in the main menu), this means by the time I've got up, the EPG is ready to use if needed, and it turns itself off at midnight.

I've been using Play TV for the PS3 and it works very well. Recordings are great quality. I'd recomend it if you have one.

if you have bt broadband then btvision is excellent.

It also has the added benefit of having all the replay stuff available from the internet like BBC, 4OD, 5ive and soon ITV all by streaming and works perfectly, takes about 5 seconds to start streaming and never misses a beat.

They also have HD film downloads.

We've had a Humax 9200 for a few years now and it's been great, would recommend it as well.

Oh, is there any tips to get my signal better? I have an amplified Aerial but it still seem to loose signal very frequently, ideally would like an indooe point going to the roof but where my room is just aint possible :(

this might sound obvious, but you will only notice the noise if everything else is off. when watching the tv, you cant hear it.

at night however, i dont use it to record because it keeps me awake (its in my room). have to use my dvd recorder as its much quieter.

Hmm, it would be in my bedroom.

To be fair, I have a projector above my head which hum's like a nun getting broke in.

I have never really had a go with a Humax, so don't really know have good they are?.

I love my Topfield TF5800 though;). It does everything I want and more... Had it just over a year and never really hooked it up to the PC & the other day decided to hook it up. Managed to update the firmware, download music to it :) & transfer my programmes to & from my PC to burn to DVD for my Brother :). You can now record via the web or by sending a text message lol :).

I also have mine in my bedroom & I record through the night, day & then leave it recording while I go to sleep. You can sometimes hear the HD spinning, but its not that loud as there's no fan or anything.
