Not sure if they're wrangled it yet, but if you want gmail.com then you state your country as USA. For legal reasons they haven't been able to give gmail.com domains to UK residents, instead we get googlemail.com if you select UK.

makes no difference, its only your login. email addresses work @gmail or @googlemail anyway. its academic
