grey sensor

Hi guys,

Ive got a W reg clio 172.

1) what is the sensor located on the top right hand side of the engine (tucked underneath the engine hood)? Its grey, about two inches long x 1cm wide x 1cm deep, unplugs from the engine. Once unplugged, it comes apart - forming two parts approx 1inch x 1cm x 1cm each, with one part still attached to the lead, the other part free. Research so far indicates its some kind of manifold pressure sensor, but im not sure. Ive got some photos of it but not sure how or if I can upload them onto this thread.

(im not very mechanically minded, so some explanation of what it does would be really useful too)

2) if faulty, could it be the cause of the engine turning over but not catching?
3) is it easy to replace? approx cost of a replacement part?

Basically, my engines not been starting on a few occasions over the past 4 or 5 months (turns over, doesnt catch as in point 2 above). Usually, after tweaking the grey sensor it will start beautifully. Today nothing is happening, tweaking makes no difference, ive tried holding it firmly in place, but car just isnt starting. It appears to be dead.

I took it into Renault ages ago when the problem first arose, and they said that the sensor looked fine, and its normal for it to feel a little loose. Electronics test came back fine - they found nothing wrong with the car that would cause it not to start (typical).

See if you can get a piture is it plugged into the intake manifold (the bit with Renaultsport written on)?

It sounds like the MAP sesnor there not check £70 or so new.
Bt also check the Top dead center sensor they are renownd to fail.

sound like your describing the air temp sensor.

ARr right thats the air intake temperature sensor.

Its just clipped in and yep its the source of your problems the coler temsp will be causing problems.

I've nveer check the price of that sensor won't be checp try a breakers yard etc.

Renault specilaist breakers yard in accrington will be able to find or have one in stock.

But check that it isnt the connector on the loom rather than the sensor.

How do I check that its the connector on the loom rather than the sensor? Whats the loom?

Ive been told by a few renault specialists that the piece in question is the manifold air pressure sensor (having seen the photos) and used prices range from £20 - £40.

Is the manifold air pressure the same thing as the air intake temperature sensor?

And is a manifold absolute pressure (MAP?) sensor the same thing as the manifold air pressure / intake temp sensor?

BenR if youve got one spare i'd be interested.

The MAP sensor is manifold absolute pressure, it is different to the air temp sensor.

The MAP sensor is black and about 2" x 1" and 10mm thick, attatched to the offside end of the inlet manifold.

The grey sensor on the nearside (right hand side of the engine if your looking at it) of the inlet manifold, actually on one of the manifold runners, is the air temp.........they are quite different and easy to tell apart.

The loom is the vehicle wiring, if your having to jiggle the plug then its possible its the connector rather than the sensor, but if you dont know how to check or repair the its pretty useless me telling you to check it lol.

If its the cold weather causing the sensor to fail, then are there any immediate quick fix measures you can take to get it working again (stick a hairdryer on it? joke)? Further would a new part solve the problem?

If its the loom thats the problem then im screwed cos I would have no idea how to fix it.

I guess ill have to run the gauntlet and get a new part and see what happens. A bit of trial and error.

Least now you know what "specialists" to use. Thats the air temp one for 100% sure.
