grinding noise under hard acceloration in 1st and 2nd gear

take it to another garage :)

or do some basic checks yourself. get it off the ground and wiggle the wheel, see if there's any play with hands at 9 and 3, and 12 and 6. also be able to see if the cv boot is leaking. maybe dodgy bearing, should get worse on left hand bends. you sure its the wheel? when engine mounts are knackered the manifold can hit the subframe under heavy acceleration in 1st and 2nd and you get heavy vibration or knocking. the manifold is only 1cm above the subframe under normal conditions. you can resolve this by slackening off the engine mounts and pulling the engine forward. one way to check worn mounts is stick it in 1st with your handbrake on and try and pull away, get a mate to see how much the engine rocks. have a search for knocking under acceleration, lots of threads.

people have had different results from changing different mounts. some change the dogbone and it cures it, some change the top left mount and it cures it. me, i think i managed to cure mine by tightening up a bolt on the upper gearbox mount on the right.

you'll only need to do all of them if they are all shagged.

does your gearstick move back and forth alot when accelerating/ decelerating?

get a picture of the engine mount (one on the left) from above and post it here, would like to see the gap between the rubber bit in the middle and the rear side of the mount.

if you mean, "do i need to loosen all the mounts to pull it forward" then no just the engine mount on the left. you need to slacken off the four large bolts holding the mount to the body. don't worry, you're engine won't drop. you should be able to see the plates on the mount move when you pull it back and forth. pull it forward, or better still get a bar down the back between the wall and the engine and use a bar to lever it forward while doing the mounts back up.
