grinding noise

Hi guys, my first post on here. I am going to make it short and to the point.

When I brake, I hear a grinding noise on the front to front-left side of the car. However I do not think it's the brakes because I also hear it when I accelerate from standstill.

Do you have any idea what it could be?

Sounds like it could be wheel bearings.
Are you sure its not a stone caught up in the brake pads, dont forget they are in contact with the discs all the time, applied or not.

Do you get this on hard acceleration? = maybe engine mounts

Or acceleration on a corner? = CV Joints

Although you say you get this when braking also...

Can you hear a grinding/rubbing/whiring/ noise when rolling slowly - if so then it may be your bearings as Brian says.

Jack up the car and hold the wheel in a 12 and 6 o'clock position and wobble it - if there is any play then your bearings are shot.... also turn the wheel whilst its jacked up if you feel and resistance when turning and or a grinding noise/feeling then again your bearings.

Check your engine mounts, and or CV joints. Check to see if the rubber seal is still intact in the joints.

Is the grinding when you turn in one direction only when acclerating or both?

But also check your bearings by jacking up your car.

if its the left wheel bearing it will should get louder when you turn right as the weight of the car transfers to the left side and when you turn left it should go quieter as the weight then goes to the right side of the car. does yours do this?

I had this problem with my dynamique not long ago. I needed the brakes replacing anyway, so got those done. That stopped the grinding noise I got whilst breaking. On a couple of occassions since then though, i've felt vibrations through my break pedal whilst breaking hard, you can hear it too, but it's not grinding anymore.

I used to hear a small grind whilst pulling away like you also, but that stopped completely after I got the brake pads renewed. I don't think it was a ever break problem though, which confuses me. Does it happen when you break softly?

I'd like to get this diagnosed as much as you, because I don't think my problem has been fixed.

The vibrations when you brake hard just sounds like the abs kicking in as thats exactly what it feels like when i brake hard too. Ive had cars where the discs have had a lip on the edge where they have worn over time and ive used the flat edge of a screwdriver to scrape off as much of the surface rust as possible and that has sometimes cured the noise. With out seeing the brakes though its always hard to diagnose.
