GTT Conversion Questions.

Just weighing up my options before I either fully advertise my car or, start spending a bit more money on it for suspension etc..

So, few questions:

1) What do you exactly need? What gets changed? Need a list - like, Engine, gearbox, Clutch etc..

2) Can I get rid of the choke? I dont like them - itd seriously put me off - Ive seen the BB Fuel injection Kit but not sure if it does get rid of the choke? I think it just fuels when you give it some.. ? Anyone know?

I know when people have added this they are getting like 30MPG as opposed to 22odd with their Grp A Carbs.. which is another reason Id look at it.

3) Do they really not start in hot weather? Or is this just a dodgy starter problem like on 16vs?

4) Reliability. I do 50 miles a day, 5 days a week so it NEEDS to work.. I wont be doing anything silly like turning the boost right up - if I do anything itll be sensible. Will it cope with 50 miles a day? heh..

If I have any more questions, Ill post.. hehe.

Thanks.

1) Engine, Gearbox, Drive shafts, brakes, all hoses, wiring loom, dials

2) Best to speak to BB but i assume that kit will get rid of it

3) its jus the fuel starts to evaporate but after a few seconds it will start up its jus a minor problem

4) Yea it will be fine as long as ur not doin mad mods tryin to get it over 200BHP itll be fine for an everyday car

You use 16v Driveshafts tho, yea? I thought GTT ones were too short, so when ya go on full lock, they pop out?

What about clutch?

I already have 16v/Williams brakes anyway.. so wont need them.

the clutch u should get with the engine but yes u will need a GTT one

u can use either i was told

Brakes down jus the rest to go!

Av a look on the FS theres a GTT lump for sale

3) this can be caused by f**ked anti perc fan that was fitted to stop this problem like essex lad says they are prone to fuel evaporation due to the inlet manifold and carb being sat directly above the exhaust manifold. another way to improve start 1st time is to fit a volvo 440 turbo starter motor loads of the gtoc boys used to do it.

4) im assuming the engine will be getting stripped and rebuilt. in which case no problem at all. if you arent the reliablity might be an issue as there are so many abused ones about. i had my gtturbo 2 1/2 years and it never broke down on me once. if they are looked after and idled have regular servicing and oil changes they are totally reliable. most problems happen when morons run too much boost and dont look after them

I wasnt going to have it rebuilt straight away - if I do, it starts mounting up and it makes it not cost effective at all.. Id rather just sell mine and get a Williams etc.. (Looking at 3k if I had it fitted, rebuilt and everything...)

If I could get it all done for £1500, I might consider doing mine.. but I dunno how realistic that is.

I could always rebuild and mod it at a later date.. I guess..

Im going to e-mail BB and ask about this Injection.. see if it gets rid of the choke.

As for the starter problems, Im guessing a 440 Turbo starter wouldnt be too hard to get hold of.. so probably do that - Ive been through the patch of dodgy starter on mine, and I hated it - not being able to start the car is probably the most annoying thing to me.. haha.

the conversion costs about £1k then the engine etc bout £250 so still in ur budget but its up to u wot u want

Well yea, but then at a later date.. I can always have it dropped out, rebuilt, played with etc.. when I want some more power..

I wouldnt imagine itd cost much to drop out an engine already in and put it back? I know in the long run it would cost more, than having the work done before it goes in, but then.. it starts seeming very expensive, very quickly.

no point in a rebuild unless u got high mileage, heavy mods or u dont know the history of the engine

the £1k will be for pissin bout with the wiring and gettin everything setup so once its in no it wont cost a lot to drop it in and out

Speak to Andy GDI, seen some of his pics and they look very good.

Some one called brun on here has posted alot of pictures of the conversion he had done.

I think its a good idea - bit different to the norm, turbo power is quality any way as its far far more tunable than n/a engines.

In the long run alot more cost effective as GTT lumps are cheaper and easier to fix and cheaper and easier to tune.

If your doing 250 a week Id say get a more reliable engine a 1.8 can be transplanted for about £1400.

Otherwise get a 1.9 TD engine you will save yourself a bit a tunned disel will get about 50mpg so your looking at saving £600 a year plus a diesel should be good for 120hp which is stock GTT numbers with just some messing round with the pump and boost settings another 15~20 hp with some more work ie intercooler exhaust intake, plus a diesel will feel faster during normal driving due to the torque.

A GTT will cost you about £1000 to be fitted plus whatever the cost you are spending on a doner car Your best of buying a whole car for the bit you need and fell taht is left for some cash. If you spend £500 on an old GTT and dropt het into the clio it wont IMO be as reliable as your present engine. Most people buy cheap GTT cars and then use them to be the start of expensive rebuilt work.

Money and a donor car, dont bother buying bits seperate its not worth the hassle............oh and 16v driveshafts

Not sure on that but if its a cheap conversion id look into gettin that done on mine, though dont let the choke put you off, its not THAT bad....

Mine does struggle to start a bit when its hot but thats only after a run and im not sure if my starter motor has a heat shield, never checked...

They ARE reliable, but, you have to be certain on the history of the engine, and in most cases you cant...........id seriously consider saving for longer and having a rebuilt engine put in, you will only regret it otherwise.............GTT engines have a bad rep because spotty nova boys get em and figure out how to turn the boost up without sorting the fuelling or uprating anything....

oh and if your gonna have it done speak to Andy at GDI about it

as far as I am concened, and many experienced people in the trade the biggest problem with the GTT engine is the carb...

we never have problems getting enough fuel to the engine... its just getting the air in there 28mm is just not big enough to shift sufficient air into the engine....
