Have I been diddled on my 24K service

  53 plate 172
Before I go and have a rant at my dealers on Monday as they couldn't be arsed to stamp my service book after spending £350 on a 24K service/MOT I just want to get a few things straight after checking my invoice.

It is the same dealer as I used for the £12K service 2 years ago so was expecting the same level of service.

Differences:

12K
I received a completed Renault service cheek sheet.
They used 5 litres of fully-syn oil at £6.50 per litre.

24K
No service sheet
They used 5 litres of semi-syn oil at £8.95 per litre.

Should I get a service sheet?
Which oil should I expect?

Thanks

350 is a lot for a minor service. including MOT id expect that to be around 200 mate.

You have to watch them like a hawk mate. Did they change your air filter? I've been to 2 dealerships for my 12k and 24k services, neither changed the air filter and both used the wrong grade of oil. The problem is that most dealerships don't even know the service intervals for the RS, never mind what needs to be done at them.

Some don't ever know what a clio 1*2 is.

I'm guessing that's the 'Cartouche Filtran' at £15.30?

Spent well over a grand in the past month, what with insurance, tax, mot, service, tyres.

I'm struggling to justify keeping it to be honest. I only drive back and to to work (10 miles). At the weekends I drive a Meriva

oh b****cks, the missus has just been on the phone to say there is an oil patch on the garage floor. I take it this isn't normal just after an oil change??

Not if it's a large patch.

It has been known for garages to leave out the bung or whatever it's called when doing an oil change!

£350!

I've spent less than that in 60K (three services and discs)

I'd feel less hurt if I'd dropped the soap in a Lifers Wing Shower!

P.S: oil drips are common if they make a dogs ars* of catching the oil from the filter and leave it running everywhere!

hi, well if you think that is bad, listen to this. i took my new 197 F1 in to have a replacement damper fitted after only 7 weeks. i was working just up the road from the dealership and i saw my car getting a right caning down the road, smoke ripping from the front tyres. i went mad. it took 2 blokes to test drive it , or well joy ride it as i would have said. anyway i got an apology from the service manager a set of clio mats luxury and the tail pipes all free of charge. the mechanic who done the replacement got a tongue bashing off of me and his superiors.

Hi edde,

I have noticed something regarding oil grade in your servicing thread in the guide section, you state to make sure 5/40 oil goes in as opposed to 10/40 as per normal clio. However, in the thread (posted above) of yours about renault recommended fluids you have a link to a pdf. chart, and this states 15/40 is recomended.

Was the 5/40 just a typo??

Thanks

p.s. your PM box is full ;)

Make sure you have enough oil in it to get back to the garage and then fire a round or two at them

The garage is only up the road, which is why i used them. i got in from work about 7.20pm, checked the garage floor, deffo a good size leak.

They can look out tomorrow. I regret using a dealer now. May as well have gone to a cheap garage.

Reno are ghey, it took me 4 trips to a garage and myself to point to a leak in the power steering pump which the mechanic couldnt see yet I could put my hand on it whithout looking.

Lesson learnt, dont go to Reno.

Is this oil patch fresh oil or dirty black oil?

If it is fresh oil, then you may have a leak from the sump plug. Not good.

If the oil is dirty, then it is most likely a bit of spilt oil from the oil filter when it was unscrewed. The old oil will have run down the front of the engine and onto the undertray, leaking out through the round inspection cover directly under the sump plug. This is ok.

Probably haven't done the plug up properly like they did with my coolant hoses on my old R19.

If your car is out of warranty I'd go for a specialist instead

They didnt check that when they put it in? Sounds like the plug washer wasnt right.

I had mine done and used a copper one, only later to find out that the Mark 1's need a rubber seal on the inside. Lost around 2l of oil (added up) then just replaced the seal myself on the driveway.

Tempted to have a go myself next time.

Can anybody recommend a good independent garage in the chester/north wales area?

both used the wrong grade of oil.
Do you know what the correct grade of oil is? 10-40 is fine to use.

Could be or might be the pollebnt filter is there a part number I'll check then.

Pm box is always full I've aksed to have it fixed without any luck.

OIls allowed to be used depend where and what temps the cars used 5-40 is the better poil for the Uk but 10-40 is still fine only issue is it doens't work in the enine below -20 dgerees which ins't a huge issue is it.

Dunno if its the same with anything after mk1s but did they change the copper washer??
The Mk2 use the cpper and rubber sump plug.
Problem now fixed by dealer, apparently the sump plug was split.
They didn't replace it thats lazy.

Only certain nes need the rubber sump gasget the willams use the copper one. Doens't matter realy but the rubber one i supposed to be used to stop the dissimilar metal corrosion so needed on some cars. Its abetter washer realy but 90p vs 10p.

So what about 15/40 oil, as recommended in that very official looking table in that .pdf you linked to above in the thread?? three possible oils to choose from???:S

That seems alot of money for a 24k service!! I got quoted £200 with Mark Fish, and I'd much rather trust my car with him than Renault!

lol 350... am having a major service for £70 at a garage at great houton. am sure some people might know where it is, its bargain quality, got my brand spanking new tyres half the price i would pay normally from any other garage... its bloody packed though, have to wait a week for my service.

well dealer garages do tend to charge more... i dont see the point in going to renault for a service and mot when you can go in really good garage for the fraction of the price, what you pay is labour for them to check your car,, i.e taking everything apart and looking at it.. additional parts to go ontop of the price, am sure you know this... 350 i could be several new parts for my car.

Oil recomendations depend on where and how the car is used in the Uk I've never recomend 15/40 oil.

Having just looked at the text maybe it could be better spaced and should read

ACEA A2/ A3 15W40 or 15W50
ACEA A2- 96/ A3- 96 15W40 or 15W50.

^^^^(thats the oil specs standard minimum)^^^^

Oils of 10- 40 and even as low as 0- 30 can be used but if you drive your engine hard or do long journeys 5/ 40 or 10/ 40 are better.

ACEA A1- 98 is the standard oil.
ACEA A1 is the oil for fuel economy in 10W10, 10W40 or 10W- 50.

For none EC companies API SH/ SJ 15W- 40, 15W- 50 is the spec you want.
API SJ- IL SAC GF2 standard
