Hazard light / immobiliser problem

Hi All

I have done a bit of a search regarding immobiliser problems on here and it seems the general consensus is that it is the reciever by the ignition barrel is the problem?

Anyway, i have a Clio 1.2 16v 52 and i have an issue with the hazard lights / immobiliser.

On tuesday night, i was driving home in traffic and indicated to pull into the next lane, someone flashed me in, and i put the hazard lights on to say thank you, then this is the start of the problem, the hazard lights wouldn't turn off no matter how hard i was pressing the button. In the end, i had to press and hold the hazard button to stop it from flashing. I eventually picked up some speed and i managed to turn it off.

The following morning, i drove to work, had no issues, locked the car and walked to work. When i came back to the car after work, i found that the hazard lights were flashing and must have been doing so for quite a while, as it had run the battery quite flat that i couldn't unlock it with the central locking, so had to manual open the door. Went to try and start the car and there wasn't enough juice to do so. Quick call to the AA and they come and put the jump leads and try to start it, nope, the immobiliser wont turn off and the hazard lights are still blinking away. Tried various things and nothing worked, so got towed home.

I fitted a new battery since the other one was dead, but now when i connect the battery up the hazard lights just keeps blinking and i still cant turn it off. If i try to start the cat the immobiliser light just stays on constantly, no blinking, just a constant light.

So does anyone have any ideas? Apart from towing it to Renault and letting them rape me for the sum of a few hundred quid? I have tried both keys, clicking it to POS several times, unlocking and locking the central locking. I'm at a complete loss here :(

i dont think that the immobiser problem is linked to your hazard light problem.

To fix the hazards you just need a new button. (i got one off ebay not long ago, when mine wouldnt click back in to turn off)

This immobiser problem has appeard on the forum a number of times (even i had it)

I found that it was a weak battery that was causing the immobiliser to stay armed. (the central locking still worked though)

Since you got a new battery, i would suggest checking the charge on it with a battery tester from Halfrauds or similar.

Have you tried letting all the dash lights go out before starting the engine?
Can you hear the fuel pump priming?

edit, to stop the hazrads blinking, either just push a thin bit of paper between the button and the surrounding plastic, or remove it altogether.

To remove , it the pannel, (locking button, harzard button, demister) comes off by pulling it towards you after removing your stereo.
although you can take it off without taking out your stereo by prying it (carefully) at the edges with a thin flat screwdriver.

Many thanks for the tips you have given there. The battery should be fine as it from someone i know who runs a battery company so should be all good and charged, but will get a multimedia across it just to double check.

I have turned the key to the 1st click and left it for everything to go out, but the immobiliser still stays on. I can hear the fuel pump clicking and whirring into life as well. I'm not sure if i mention that i could turn the engine over for about 3 turns and then it would cut out, which suggest immobiliser.

I'm guessing if the light status doesn't change, i should try a need reciever around the ignition barrel?

Cheers for a mini how to on how to remove it as well :D
