headgasket

the headgasket on my mk1 needs doin badly cos the rocker cover looks like an explosion at a mayonaise factory:eek:, has ne body changed the headgasket themselves? how easy is it? ne thing to watch out for? thanx

Its a very simple task.

Just follow your haynes as its already a published how to no need for me to go over it again.

Just make sure you havea new head gasket which you leave in teh pack till you need it, dont get oil or your grubby mits on the face, hold it byt he edges or fire rings.

Make sur eyou havea decent torque wrench and know the undoing and torquing up sequence for the head. apart from that its just an unbolt and bolt up process.

Oh, you can get a new cambelt whilst your at it.

have fun!

how easy is it to do a headgasket on avalver ? how much do u recon a garage wud charge bcos i dont think id dare touch it ! dont wanna f**k it up !

a lot lookin bout £300!

my mate done his and said it didnt take too long!

ne one fancy puttin together a guide as i wouldnt mind changing mine before it goes!

Valve cover off, cam covers off, exhaust manifold unbolted, take of belt, unbolt head in sequence, take off, clean up faces, gasket on torque up in sequence, cambelt on after checking timing marks, bolt eveything else on and done.

Ok, brief, but its not that big a deal, just a major unbolt and rebolt procedure.

there will be lots of hoses and plugs and wire to take off the head though, but its all obvious.

leave the manifolds on.

I swapped my energys HG last week. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Took the 16V head off earlier today and didnt fond what I was hoping for.

Anyway leave the manifolds on and use them as handles.

Also use decent sockets. I recommend halfords gear, I have snapped the best (snap on, brittool etc) and I have yet to snap a halfords jobbie.

E12 for the energy engines and T55 for the 16Vs. Use a 3/8 socket.

AGree....snapped a bitannia extension bar yesterday!!!!

Id rather take the exhaust manifold off as gettign the compensator bolts back in is the most annoying thing in the world!!!!
