Heater Hose Removal

Any help appreciated! How should these hoses disconnect correctly?

Push the clips in on either side, push in then pull out hard.

One of the shittiest jobs ever!
Matrix can't move inwards enough to slide out, so need to remove lower console, and the heater housing towards the center of the car.
What I thought would be an afternoons work, turned into a weekend with the whole dashboard out.....
