Hello!

  Ph1 Clio 172, VX220
Hi all,

I am new to this forum, I've had a Ph1 172 since January and love it. I bought it as needed to downgrade or at least recoup some money when I moved house. I previously had a tuned Cooper S. The standard (I think) Clio is (was) quicker than the modified 198bhp Cooper S and probably as much fun, if not more!

To be honest, I've resisted coming on the forum as it takes up a lot of time and it's sometimes hard to avoid trying to put right silly discussions but I'm just going to stay out of anything like that!

I'm a bit of a car enthusiast really, am 30 years old and have had about 22 different cars in total - I get bored quickly. Funnily enough though, the 172 is probably one of the cheapest cars I've owned but the most fun, I've kept it nearly a year now which is also one of the longest.

I briefly owned a Renault 5 GT Turbo before I moved house to fulfil a childhood fantasy, wish I'd kept it but couldn't unfortunately, I still own a '90 Spec Escort RS Turbo which is in need of quite a lot of welding - I fully rebuilt the engine myself along with all running gear before realising how bad the shell was

I was going to be changing the Clio in around 5 or 6 months but now something major has gone wrong with the engine and it looks as though I'll need to replace it, so it looks like I'llbe keeping it! Also, the wife has been driving it for a few months and absolutely loves it!

Hi Tunst,

Thanks, yep it's a great car - really quick and since I've spent a bit on trying to put it back to standard it's not actually that uncomfortable any more either!

Having said that, it's bloomin' uncomfortable compared to the big family car Citroen C5 I've just bought - incidentally, that is comfortable but it's a bag of ****, in the garage as we speak.

I'll put some pics up tonight, got my wife to register me with the site from home as it wouldn't let me here!

It was a bit rattley when I got it but I was in denial, I didn't originally want to spend anything on the car as I originally saw it as a stop gap car - how wrong was I! I should have had all the belts etc done when I bought it.

I remember test driving a 182 pretty much when they first came out but thought it was really smooth and subtle, this is anything but. I always wondered if it had different camshafts as there is a very noticable kick at 5000rpm. It's much more raw and way nosierthan the 182, that could be due to a cheap exhaust system I found on ebay - I replaced the large bore stainless steel one for what I thought was a sort of standard twin box thing but the rear silencer is really small - probably that that's causing it to be a lot noisier than the OE exhaust. I've also put a phase 2 airbox on it to try to quieten it down, unfortunately the original box had been changed for a cone filter.
