help buying new laptop

  Renaultsport 172 Cup
I am buying a new laptop and need help getting the best one i can.
Want to spend 300 to 400 quid.

At the moment i have a desktop pc - hp, 897MHz, 256mb ram, 18.9gig, xp.
It's too slow, not enough space and overall crap.

I don't know alot but i presume you can pick up a much better laptop to my previous computer for that sort of cash.

I do a lot of downloading and would want a cd writer and dvd drive for the odd game.

I can't think of anything else i need it to do so any help and advice from someone who knows would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Dan.

I've been looking at laptops too this week although around the £600 mark.
The best brands below £600 (the ones that seem to have got the better reviews in computer mags) seem to be Toshiba & Fujitsu-Siemens. Acer aren't bad but seem generally flimsy. Sure Dell mite be ok too.

Think you'll find that the best thing is to go on to the Dell website and see what you can get for your money (lets you configure your setup). If you decide to buy from Currys online then use this codes to get discount:

http://www.currys.co.uk/GenericEditorial.php?genericeditorial=WK15_Affiliates

or Dixons:

I had a walk around Currys on Sunday and they had a very nice toshiba one for £349 think it was 1.5ghz celeron.
