had mine on last week (182 ) took it to my local dealer and they said the test wouldnt give them an error code,so they reset it and said come styraight back if it comes back on and hopefully will be able to get a fault code this time...they said it seemed like an itermitant(sp) fault..it did come on a month or so before for ten mins then never came back

that was last thursday and still not come on

It basically indicates that the exhaust gasses are not within tollerence.

If it's sounding very rough then it's almost certainly a misfiring cylinder resulting in unburnt fuel going through to the cat. If you don't get this sorted pronto you could destruct one or more of your CATs and you'll be looking at a very expensive repair.

I should know - it happened to me - failed coil > unburnt fuel & warning light > CAT A crack > CAT B failure.

LOTS of trips to the garage and £2000+ later it's sorted.

By the way, my local Renault dealer were useless. I'd suggest getting it to a specialist like SG Motorsport in Chippenham or Alex Clarke's garage in Exmouth.

Take the engine cover off, look at the back panel of the car from the inside the engine bay if you get what I mean.
On the back bulkhead you will see a platic valve with 2 rubber pipes going to it and one electrical connector.
Make sure the electrical connector is connected tightly to the valve as this comes loose for some reason.

May be the above.

Other than that its gona need to be connected up to the CLiP system for a diagnostic test.

A failed coil can result in car sounding like tractor, or if it's not missing every beat, just a bit rough. Should be ok for a short drive to Renault, but you want to keep the miles down or you'll be risking having to change one or more of the cats as well!

If it is a failed coil then I'd recommend they change all 6, as once one's gone the others tend to follow quickly afterwards, and you could have a few weeks/months of to-ing & fro-ing. When one went on mine, I had all the other 5 done - not much extra labour so I figured for the cost of the parts it was worth it for peace of mind. I remember one story of someone having had a coil changed and he just about drove off the garage forecourt before the 2nd one went!

10p its a coil pack

12p it's a coil.

Mine did exactly as you decribed. Drove home slowly approx 10 miles, changed the faulty coil and it was fine. Upgrade to Trophy coils when you can.

John I think a coil can fail completely (i.e. complete misfire on one cylinder), or it can simply degenerate, whereby it still fires most of the time, but starts to fail intermittently. If it's the latter, then it's unlikely that you'd notice until it got real bad.

A-ha! So the mk2's can also suffer coil probs then.... not just the burden of us poor forgotten mk1 owners!

my Warning light for monitoring exhaust gas came
on for a few days then went off it turned out to be a cracked cat!

mine has just done the exact same problem, car is under an independant warranty so not sure how they will look at this, but the exhaust gas light is flashing and it sounds rough..

its just came completely out of the blue :(
