Help required - what am I missing?

Right chaps - what obvious thing am I missing? I've got an Asus PG278Q G-Sync monitor that when connected to my previous GTX 690, was more than happy to be set at 144hz.

I picked up the GTX 1080 last week - connected up the DisplayPort cable - but I only get the refresh rates listed below....

I even had a full blown reformat of Windows 10 over the weekend and the settings still show the same. The only other change was that the GTX 690 used a mini DisplayPort connection and the 1080 uses the standard DisplayPort sized connector.

I haven't actually spent any time looking into why I can't see 144hz as a selectable option. Though I thought I'd ask you guys first before heading off into the world of Google....

Cheers,
D.

So the monitor hasn't changed, and the display port cable hasn't changed you've just removed the adapter and got a new card?

I'm assuming its running the latest driver and that you've tried changing the setting on the monitor itself using the button?

You don't actually change the refresh rate on the monitor, it has an OD (overdrive) function but I've always left that off.

TBH @Darren S I was thinking of the cable before you mentioned you'd used different cables for them both. If you turn the resolution down to 1080p does 144hz unlock in the options then?

I'd reinstall the latest Nvidia driver Darren but when you start it select "custom" installation and ensure you check the box for "perform a clean install".

If that doesn't sort it try a different DP cable

You can change the refresh rate on the monitor, but I reckon its down to the driver and if Windows isn't listing 144Hz as available the monitor won't switch to it either.

Can't you set it in the customise section? You can create your own resolution settings in there normally?

Is that the turbo button?

Just tried setting it to 60 but my Control panel still shows 144

Yes, admittedly the button doesn't tend to respond that well, but I can use the button on both of mine to change between 60/120/144Hz

Either way, 85hz isn't an option- so either it's not detected the monitor properly or the cable doesn't support a high enough bandwidth.

Or maybe a driver issue. Who knows lol

Cheers guys - the cable was just a generic DP cable from Scan - I couldn't recall if I had one at home (which it turns out, I do) - so I bought one at the same time as picking up the 1080. Could be that that doesn't support 144hz?

@Gareth - I did try using the menu options on the monitor themselves - but it won't show 144hz as an option, whereas it previously did.

I noticed that 85hz cap was there on Thursday, when I simply uninstalled the 690s from my PC and swapped it with the 1080 on my existing Windows 10 installation. After the reformat of this weekend, the above 85hz cap is all I'm getting - again, with the latest driver from nVidia.

The point of blame feels like its narrowing down on the cable. I'll try that other DP cable tonight and if that makes no difference - I'll double-check the monitor setting itself. It will be something and nothing - just 'what' at this moment in time!

Cheers,
D.

It can't limit Hz as such, but different DP versions have different bandwidth limits. That's why I said try 1080p. Less pixels to drive means it can achieve higher Hz with the same bandwidth. If you change it to 1080p and then 144hz is an option then you know it's a bandwidth issue (cable) and not some other gremlin somewhere.

If you change it down to 1080p and you're still hard capped at 85Hz then I'd say it's something software related.

A DP cable is a DP cable; there's no real difference (unless you've got a rare reduced bit rate cable). DP is capable of the 12.7Gbps needed for 144Hz at 1440p (which is more demanding than 4k @ 60hz, 12Gbps). Interesting... I've not seen this issue before so I can't really offer much in the way of advice personally.

A lot of DP cables aren't even certified, so 'a DP cable is a DP cable' is pure blasphemy!

LOL! Ok, a certified DP cable is just a certified DP cable then. No matter whether it's 1.1 or 1.2 or whatever :tonguewink: Should still be able to deliver the necessary bandwidth. Pedant. :tongueclosed:

I've actually got another issue now - lol. Now that the monitor and 1080 are fully in sync with one another, Geforce Experience wants to try to upscale everything to 4k then have it scaled back to the 1440 resolution. Personally, I think it looks shite - DOOM simply looked like the resolution wasn't native (which it clearly isn't) and had the obvious performance hit of running the game at 4K.

Once back into its 1440 @ 144hz territory, it's silky smooth and looks bloody good to boot. Another thing for me to bear in mind..... :)

Past 10ft you'll start to get issues also
