HELP!! something gone wrong :( gearbox maybe??

okay so driving home today very close to my house and massive noise came from the engine the best way i can describe it is like i ran over a big plastic bottle :/ followed by crunching noises i stopped the car and couldnt help but notice the massive trail of fluid behind my car and a puddle under it, it seems to be leaking from under the engine but when the car is parked and i turn it on the engine sounds wrong.


Im really not the best with cars and any help or suggestions to what this could be would be really appreciated

Does the puddle smell like cat piss?? If so its gear oil.

So is the engine still running? I.e in neutral there's no noises?

That sounds very ominous ! Nothing should be dropping oil , so it's either going to be engine oil or gearbox oil , get a light take some photos , do not start it again!

If it's engine oil it will do damage if you run it ! Could have damaged the sump ? Or possible damaged the gearbox !

okay thanks for the quick responses guys! the car is way up the street now and its pissing down! ill take photos tomorrow and no it didnt smell like cat piss :/ i quicky pulled over turned the car off and had a look wasnt sure and turned it back on when idling the engine sounded wrong

forgot to mention i replaced the alternator yesterday but everything seemed fine. the big noise happened as i was putting it into third gear or just after i put it into gear

Could be a number of things a broken gear box could cause a noise on idle if something's catch but obviously the engine with no oil in could too! I'd be getting photos , failing that if your not mechanical take it to a specialist ( have it recovered )

ps hopefully the alternator is still okay, shouldn't leak oil , although if the belts come off could of damaged the water pump or any coolant hoses ! Check the header tank for water ! And check the belt as well!

If the belt has come off be thankful the Cambelt didn't die !

the belt is fine from what i could see and when i didnt have it on idle that belt ran fine. my brother is pro car man but he cant help today hopefully tomorrow. the alternator looked fine
ill ill try decribe where the part that looked leaking is
in the middle of the car back of the engine (closest to windscreen) under the engine

So you're car dumped an unknown fluid, suspected oil then you decided to start it up again???


check all fluid levels?

it's gearbox oil

there is oil that looks to be leaking from the bottom of the bellhousing where the gearbox mates to the engine

is there anything to break in there to leak oil or is it likely that the gearbox has broken a hole in it?

Clutch/input shaft. Either way the box is shagged by the sounds of it.

Haven't smashed a hole in the diff housing have you? my 205 did this changing to 2nd!
Same sound, same fluid trail

Release fork on the clutch probably shattered and blown a hole in the casing. Happened on a mates 172 Cup
