HELP - stop lights?

hey all, i was on my way home and i had been stuck in traffic for a good 2 hrs, and when i was in traffic, my 2 STOP lights has turned on, where i noticed my coolant temperature needle and shot up to the max, but after a while it went back to the constant temp and the lights turnt off again. it did it once more.

anybody know or had this problem before and what you reckon it might be. the weird thing is when it said stop, i was not moving in the first place, and when i did move, the car seem to be normal and drive fine.

Could be your coolant temp sensor , it cause the temp needle to dance about and the car runs a bit rough . Quite a common problem . I had it happen on mine twice just after i bought it , never done it since ( touch wood )

Stop means stop the engine as its overheating its 101 degrees r somthing it comes on (depends on car speed)

Check the sensor as said most likly failed also check see if your cooling fans comming on but that not that likly compaired to failed sensor.

rihgt i think is the fan, (as its not moving when i turn the engine on, the fan is on the right on the front of the car isnt it.) also i was wondering when the coolant gets topped up. (is it when you get a serivce, or should u always check it) also what needs to be put in it? any special specific thing at all?

Fasn only comes on when the engine tesmp excessed 105 or 100 degree (depends on speed the cars doing) standing it still for 10 minutes should set it off though.

Renault type D coolent should be the only stuff used usualy topped off at service its the big bottle bolted to the bulkhead
