Help with upgrading software on 3GS

Girlfriend has just got a 3GS on Orange. Plugged it into iTunes to update the software to 4.0.2. It downloads the software and then comes up with cannot update software as network connection has timed out, please check network settings and try again.

Any idea what could be causing this and what could be done to sort it?
