HELP!

Iv not driven my 172 in 4 days,come to drive her 2nite,got 2 mins into my drive home,when it dropped a cylinder and the orange engine warning light started flashing,seems to idle ok but exhaust is VERY boomy,then feels like on 3 cylinders when driving,any ideas guys??

it seems the light only flashes for a few mins then goes out?

iv pulled each lead off the coil and all are soarking so its more of a really bad missfire but i can hardly move on its own steam

Could be wrong but sounds like the ECU has put the car into limp home mode, could be cuased by fault with coil pack, ecu cuts coil / fuel to prevent CAT damage.

Not too familar with the engine but if the coils are independant swap them over to each plug / cyl to see which one has failed and try and trace the problem from there - can be the case the ECU will monitor faults on each coil/cyl and if it gets above 280 errors will cut that coil - thats how they are on VAG cars anyhow.

Have you got access to a scanner or fault logger to pull the codes off to check the issue?

good point, if the cat has gone poof, it will go into limp home mode, and if totally knackered and the core has collasped it will give a more throaty resonance sound - is there a distiniive exhasut rattle? have you just filled up with fuel before the problem happened, i.e correct fuel in the tank (500,000 per year fill their cars with the wrong fuel, most likly not the case but worth checking

just put fuel in,then left for 3 days,def put super in her

got a 25k garage comp to plug in monday night lol hopefully that will tell me,im laying money on either cat has died,or one of my 2 lambda probes?

taylor,as mines a late ph1, (june 01 regd) i have 2 lambdas,will yours fit? as if it is the cat il have it off ya bud

right fault codes are :

missfire 1

and knock sensor,so prob go for a knock sensor 1st?

right tried a coil pack off my mates 172 and still the same,i cant see it being a knock sensor,as surely it cant make it run like its on 3?

im trying a set of plugs in it,shortly,so im keeping my fingers crossed its that,does anyone have any other ideas???

fixed!!!!!

turns out even though they all sparked when tested it was the plugs!

I had missfire problem. Only after replacing plugs + leads it solved.

i wasnt expecting plugs tbh mate,as they were only changed @ 70k but hey ho,im glad thats solved it
