hi. im the real shadey.

  renault 172
About 16000 miles back (approx 18 months ago) i bought a cheap 172 and put my pulsar in the garage (which i soon swapped for an overated motorcycle which I soon sold and replaced with a suitably madR one ). I have grown to like this civilised transport. It is discreet yet satisfying and, most surprisingly, economical enough for me to wish to continue our interaction.
Unfortunately the clutch has suddenly complained. I have bought a replacement (LuK), together with a belt KIT (genuine) and a replacement waterpump and now seek the best visual and verbal instruction needed for me (non mechanic- who is handier than handyandy) to undertake this task.

HELLO . ANYBODY OUT THERE? ( i am borrowing the facilities of my friends four post ramp- I understand this is not as suitable as the two post)

any comments well apreciated.

Hello, welcome

If you're mechanically minded and have done cambelts before you should be fine - but make sure you get all the proper locking tools for the job. If not I'd take it to one of the specialists on here - not toooo expensive and no risk to you.

I smell a troll, or an older generation chap

EFA
I could call the grammar/spelling police so not well educated.

Perhaps midlife crisis thinking Eminem is "hip".

If genuine, then accept my apologies and a hearty warm welcome from me.
Nothing wrong with us older generation chaps. The hair that I've got left is going iceberg lol.

Hi folks. Big thanks for the welcome! Ok . Im a wrinkled old git with not much grey hair, but on the plus side at least my insurance costs are reasonable.

Im getting worried now. The clutch and timing belt arrived. Do I need the auxiliary belt too please? What are the locking tools I need? And just in case I lose my bottle how much is this work in labour costs? This is no wind up but I am the realshadey.

Yes you should do the whole auxiliary belt kit - not just the auxiliary belt. the aux belt kit is a 3 year 36k interval i believe and the timing belt is 72k /5 year. may also be worth replacing the dephaser pulley (intake cam pulley) as it is part of the vvt system and is known to fail (will rattle around a lot) and only takes a few mins extra whilst you've got the belt off but if it goes afterwards you'll have to do the timing belt job again to replace it
there 3 tools you need, one to lock the cams, one to hold the cams in the right place and one to lock the crank (i think) - please dont attempt to do the job without these as you're very likely to (at best!!) mis time your engine. the renault parts are around £200 though copies are available from laser and sealey but i've read these are a bit poo and bend/break.
The specialists on here charge £400-500 ish for a timing belt replacement (including the parts) - so not sure how much it'd be labour only.

the real shady or the real slim shady?

Thanks for that, you didnt know he was my brother I bet. Im still searching believe me. My analysis from available info so far is to remove the engine complete with gearbox (from top) whilst leaving sub frame in place. This should cut ovarall access work and also create time saving on clutch and belt(s) replacement. Am I on the right track please?

Hi again enthusiasts, and helpers. Ive just bought the aux belt kit (genuine) . PLEASE . whats all this about dephaser pulley replacement? Im sure mines not a problem but would i be ignorant not to replace?? Engine is on approx 63000. (car on 12700). Ive got woe full feeling I could be doomed without this extra ha'pence ( £120 ) of tar. (tim)

Sounds alright to me.

If you have a search on here for dephaser you should find plenty of info.
Tbh.. if you're spending as much as you are you may as well change it for the piece of mind. It may not be a problem now but later down the line in say 10k or 20k miles if it starts rattling you'll be wishing you replaced it when you had the chance!

yes. but please understand he is only my grandmother and i dont agree with his views. - get separated from the past.

Whereabouts are you from? Perhaps take it to your local expert and as you've got the parts, just pay them the labour. I mean a specialist, not KwikFit or the like.;)

hi u all. Its no joke the amount Ive spent thats still OUTSIDE the engine.

Ill take a photographic record of an ancient drug weary ignoramusses who attemts; engine out. clutch change . timing belt (with w/pump and dephaser) and all put back with aux belts .

The manual only starts this subject as if setting up on a factory bench. The belt hasnt snapped and therefore the crankshaft and cams are locked corectly within the teeth on the belt and this OBVIOUSLY must be replicated . I cannot understand why they make such a meal of this and it is DEFINATETLY NOT user friendly. Im beggining to suspect a maufacturer/ dealership plot. However tools to lock the shafts will be bought and used whilst I attempt this job> (I reccon the bloke who used nail polish to mark them on his mazda (search) wasnt far wrong but if any out there can tell me different...... I once did the job on my volvo simply by splicing the old belt in half, removing the outer half, sliding the new belt across the cogs on the space so vacated, cutting off and removing the remainder of the old belt , and fully repositioning the new one. Didnt get any probs obviously.

Anyway the last Laugh could still be with you. !! Have fun!! tim
