My home PC wont even turn on and just says "the application failed to initialize properly" lsass.exe

My old dear was the last to use it. Sound like a bug or something? it wont even start in safe mode and says the same thing..

Hi Tom,

How's things?

Sounds like Malware mate. Have you tried putting your Windows XP cd and booting that and initiating a repair?

If that file resides in your Windows/System32 folder it's probably legit if not then you have probably been infected. This file is Windows logon security so it could be either.

Do you have it all on your ipod? If so then your music is safe mate!

How can i salvage my music? My mums talking about taking it to a guy to sort out. I have said i best keep it..lol

When trying to boot from the windows cd it gives me the option to repair or install. I opted to repair but it asks something c:/windows and doesnt really go anywhere from there..

You need to select install, it should then find a windows installation and then ask to repair it, little confusing. Select that repair option.

If it doesn't offer to repair after you select restore then do not go any further, further more do not format the drive or its game over.

take it out and plug it in as a slave to another computer, or if you don't mind spending some money, you could try something like the following link, which will bring your HDD up as a removable drive on another PC

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=48965

you might be able to copy a working copy of Isass.exe over to your HDD and fix the problem if you are realllllly lucky

Yeah thats what it does mate then comes up with repair. I click "R" for repair and then it does some shizzle and comes up with a screen which basically says enter to just restart or c:/windows something or other..

I'll get a pic..

Ah right. Well provided it hasnt disapered when i get home i'll get some pics up..I'm pretty simple when it comes to these things..lol

  Shed.
You could alway shook the hard drive up to another Computer, that said, if you dont know what your doing then how could you. Keep all the files and then format/reinstall windows. Nowerdays if windows gives me any s**t itll just get formatted. 10,000rpm hard drive and a decent cpu doesnt take long.

Things to try:

1. Use XP recovery console to run chkdsk /r
2. Use Fixboot/Fixmbr to fix your boot record and partition
3. Add /sos switch to your boot.ini

  Better than yours. C*nt.
lsass (LSASS for reference) is the NT LM Security Provider - it's what allows you to authenticate to your machine. Basically log on, open files on an NTFS volume, open applications, administer the machine... Everything. It's that critical that Task Manager won't allow you to terminate it - ever.

The only way around that if it's not fixable through a repair installation or a system restore (did I just advise to do that? Jesus it must be bad) is to flatten the lot.

It's a very common target for malware as if exploited correctly on a corporate network could provide you with domain (or even enterprise) level administration rights to all machines to propogate the malware...

I cant get system restore as i cant even get wondows to open? even in safe mode..

The only thing i can think is to fix off the windows disk but i get so far to which looks like a dos stylee screen and i dont know what to do..I have a pic of where i get too but as my computers fucked i cant really take it off my phone...

I'm afraid it's a case of reinstall Windows. If you do it without formatting your hard disk you'll keep all your data, but you'll still have to reinstall all your apps and as Windows XP install isn't as intelligent as Vista's install it'll be messy...

But as I said, it'll mean you can get your stuff backed up and do it properly.
