How common are dead pixels on TFT's?

Im looking at getting a TFT monitor for my new PC set up but everywhere i turn people keep telling me to be wary because of dead pixels.
Is this a big/common problem with TFT monitors? Is it only the chaper monitors that this happens to or is it right accross the board?
Is there anyway to avoid it?

I think there is only one company that guarantee no dead pixels, CTX or someone like that.

It must be getting less common - I've bought a laptop, 20" and 24" monitors in the last 6 months and not a dead pixel between them. Not sure of exactly their policy, but overclockers.co.uk are right on it when it comes to customer service - I always use them, cos you can trust them, better than saving a few quid using ebay then having no comeback if it goes tits up. Incidentally, the Dells have an amazing 4 year warranty when you buy them there, too! *advert ends*!

Don't worry about it. I've seen hundreds of TFTs and only ever noticed a dead pixel on three of them. When you do get one you'll barely notice it. I only see the dead pixel on one of my TFTs @ home when it's on a black background.

I was looking at 17" and found some pretty good prices but one places has quoted me £60 which is just stupid but tempting all the same just to see what its like

You can get two grades of TFTs. Consumer grade says that you have to accept something like no more than 5% of the total screen area in the outer 5cm of the screen and no more than 1% in the inner part of the screen. The other grade (Grade A?) says that it will be totally free of Dead Pixels.

The figures there are wrong but you get the idea.

That said, the manufacturing process is so good now that hardly any stuff has dead pixels.

  Not a Clio
I've got 3 TFT's + 1, I gave my dad, all different brands and I've never seen a dead pixel on any of them.

Brands:

1x no brand (15")
1x Iiyama (17")
1x Bush (15")
1x LG (19")

  Silver 172 Ph1
Running 2 X 19" at mo and had a few TFT before these ones never had a dead pixel. Not a major issue, certainly not a reason to avoid TFTs.

its all about luck, nothing you can do about it really, just luck of the drawer.

Just a point though, most pixels aren't dead but stuck on a particular colour, thats why you only notice them on certain backgrounds.

To get one returned you have to satisfy certain requirements, its so many dead pixels in a certain area or so many stuck on a certain colour and a screen will rarely meet these requirements to allow them to be sent back as most of the time its just 1 pixel that gets stuck or dead.

You can get certain manufacturers that will guarantee no faulty pixels, these have gone through strict pre delivery inspections to make sure they haven't but because of that they will tend to be more expensive.

Just go for it and hope, unless you look for it when you get it then you are unlikely to ever notice it, unfortunately once your eye catches it you are unlikely to be able to forget about it afterwards and will always be drawn to it so the best thing to do is not try and find one!

I've had two 19" Acer Screens at home and a few at work and found no dead pixels at all.

I did find this site the other day though that says it can fix stuck pixels and burn-ins on plasma screens.

JScreenFix

On the FAQ page it states 'a few users believe that JScreenFix has fixed dead pixels on their screens'.

Haven't got a screen to try it on though.

Can't do that, they're allowed a tolerance range. You wouldn't be able to swap it because of a dead pixel.

Depends where you go, i took back 3 that were supposedly rebadged samsungs as they all had a few dead pixels.

Went to PC World and picked up a proper samsung and it's lasted over 2 years without a single dead pixel.

they are generally dead pixel free. ive never had one on any laptop, lcd tv, that ive had or seen.

You can do that, you're well within you're rights actually, called the Distance Selling Act, I did it twice 6 months ago, you only loose out on shipping.
