How differentials work.

  Clio
Sorry if this has allready been covered. (i did search but found nothing)
I'm in a learning mood tonight so was looking for some information,
could someone explain how different types of diffs work and what exactly they do,
standard diff, atb, plate, etc
Thanks!

Thanks for that! was very simple and gave a basic understanding! so now the question is...im assuming that was for a normal diff, so what about lsd and atb?

Plate type LSD essentially think of like having a clutch that's half engaged joining the two halves so that if one moves faster than the other there is resistance transmitted across which means one tries to drive the other.

Atb uses gears to detect which wheel has the most resistance and tries to send the torque there accordingly rather than relying on a speed difference between them to move the power around.

Plate type if there is a lot of preload drives horribly on the road for manoeuvring etc and if there isn't a lot of preload it doesn't work very well on track.

Quaiffe atb drives like a standard diff for manoeuvring but does a moderate job on track too, but if you lift a wheel completely it won't work just like a standard diff.

plated diffs are awesome, life is all about pulling out off pit lane with the front wheels scrubbing and dogs chattering.

Porkie's monster isn't plate is it Chip?

Yes its a plate, but its clearly set with mild ramp angles so its not a problem on the road (I dont know the actual values as I didnt build the diff or box but from driving it you can tell its not working too hard), but then its not quite as good on track as it could be either no doubt as a result, although that said its still fecking epic!
