How do I play a .MKV file?

Was trying to watch somehing last night but I Couldnt get the fooker to play in anything?

It recommends VLC player... but it kept crashing it? booooo

Any ideas much appreciated guys?

should be able to download an MKV to AVI program from the net for free.

You need the Matroska codec most likely.

mkv is just the container file. like avi but supports multiple audio channels and higher bitrates. the actual video / audio file can be a variety of codecs

VLC, dunno why yours should crash?

I tried that Mac port of XBMC and that looked pretty but crashed when I went through some of my "movies".

Perian would open MKV files but didn't play them well, I've not had a problem with MKV in VLC....

VLC plays pretty much anything and AFAIK comes with all the codecs it needs. If it's crashing then at a guess I'd say either the install is fucked, or perhaps your PC can't handle it? The mkv wrapper (x264) can be quite processor intensive in my experience.

Shitty format!! I downloaded a 4.3gb 'file' and the only way to convert to DVD was to convert it to AVI first - I couldnt be bothered!
