how do i watch MKV files???

i've just downloaded a couple of shows and have just realised their MKV files.
1. what are these?
2. whats needed to watch them?
3. will they play on my freecom media player?

VLC Player mate or download K-Lite Codec Pack so it will play on any player.

I can vouch for VLC player. Plays everything!

vlc is all you will ever need, if it can't play it then you weren't meant to see it, it even plays part downloaded avis still in their rar without unraring them.
