I have the 6 basic tutorials here you can have, its what i was given when i first started a Photoshop course, it will teach you the basics, then you have to learn do do decent stuff by yourself..

was in my group at college for 4 years.

I have tried this site as I am a complete newbie, but when I copy and paste something for lowering the top section just goes all white, or when I copied a section of the door to smooth the handle, i copied then pasted and it was just some black section. Any tips for this?

how many layers you got? it's best to copy and instead of paste...creat a new layer with just the time you copied in it...

I select it to lower, and then ctrl + C, and it just says that the area is empty?

ctrl+c when the base layer is selected
ctrl+shift+n (make new layer) - set it to "translucent" or opaque or whatever
ctrl+v
