How hard is it to change a clutch (DIY)

Looking at changing the clutch on my car as its going. My garage want 150 to do it ( its only a 1.2)... looked on ebay/parts websites and they are only like £30....

so i figured i will have a bash at it myself, maybe learn myself something in the process.

Is it s**t hard to change these things? any links to guides or anything? or should i just pay the garage?

if someone wants to "help" me i will provide you with unlimited maccy D's and cups of coffee also - ;) Luke :)

where are you bassed?

its pretty straight forward tbh, time consuming though, you can split the gearbox and engine and fit it thu a small gap with the box still fitted but to be honest if its your first time you'd probably be best removing the box, gearbox oil and driveshaft and having plenty room to do it, if removing the box it helps to have 2 people as its quite heavy!

i have just done a gear box on a polo got 50 quid for doin it as a favour if i had known the hassle i would of paid to have it done myself lol and have done quite a few already so know what im doin . so id say pay the 150 and then your still happy with your car and not ready to set it on fire. for a pro 4-5hours, for a DIY'er first timer, 2weeks approx

£150 for 4-5 hours labour is a fcukin bargain  -£30 for the clutch and it's £120 labour, £20-30 per hour is very cheap:eek:
Let the garage do it, not worth the hassle DIY to only save £120 for a new clutch

I always thought that this was the 2nd most expensive job on a Clio the clutch / box area? :S

Clutch price £150 on its own, grand total inc fitting 4 - 600 quid ball park figure :S ??

Thanks for the input guys... Spoke to matt (not normal), looks like the garage is the way forward then!.

yep got quoted by a local garage (friend of a friend owns it) £157 for a new clutch... dunno if this includes VAT but judging from reasearch i think this is worth it, even with VAT added on.

Me thinks il pay someone lol. Thanks :)

Are you sure thats not £157 for a new clutch including vat?

But not including fitting?

As said above, would bite their arm off for £150 all in.

nope. its price for a valeo clutch and fitting. thats what i got quoted.

the only thing i am not sure of is if that price includes VAT.

Remember its only a 1.2 - clutches are going for £40 quids on ebay and parts sites ( not £30 i just double checked!)

lol don't even put yourself through the hassle for 150quid, for a first timer you won't be driving the car for a few days fact.

I used to own and run my own garage and tbh I always over quoted on clutches as its a stinking filthy job and I didnt really want the job and for £150 I would gladly pay someone else.

£157 all in sounds a really good price. They probably have a technique all sorted from doing loads of them and dont even have to take the box right out of the bay.
