How long can l get away....

  Land Rover
.....with not getting out my credit card.

So, having got underneath and around my new (to me) 182 the list of jobs is as follows.

Gearbox noisy at 30mph
Clutch working but heavy (may be normal)
Significant oil leak on to engine undertray
Water pump appears to be weeping slightly (coolant level stable)
Aux Drive belt looks old

It’s going to happen eventually but l wonder, how long can l hold it off! On Land Rover Defenders an oil leak isn’t an oil leak until it drips on to the ground (not happening yet with the Clio)
I am waiting for the gearbox guy on here to find me a gearbox. And then hopefully the whole lot can be done at once.
If the oil leak is from the cam carriers lt will need another cam belt etc as well.
And it may as well have a clutch while the gearbox is off.

I had a budget for this, up to £1500. If it’s any more l am going to have to sell the number plate (l have had a tempting offer but l think it really needs to stay with the car if possible)

I need to check it out properly. I hope so.
Compared to what l have spent on cars l have had in the past this is no big deal though.
One thing, the next owner will get bargain.
As this kind of work done, doesn’t increase the value all that much.

Indeed. I am happy to spend the money as the car is in such good condition (bodywork/interior) and drives so well.

You should be used to unreliability and spending if you have a land rover.

The Land Rover (a 2005 Defender 110) has actually been the most reliable vehicle l have owned.
It’s now on 100,000 miles.
I use it all day every day and l think that is good for any machine, also it’s rarely used off road so is pretty un stressed. Plus it was a good one when l got it, many are not.

It’s a bit different to drive than a Clio 182. It’s like being upstairs on a bus after the Clio.

is it a significant oil leak or a significant amount of time before last checked, the engine undertray will get gunky and oily overtime due to the gearbox seeping oil, they all do it

The oil leak appears to be coming from a sensor screwed into the engine block right next to the oil filter?

Well, it wasn’t that. The oil was actually PAS fluid leaking from a sensor just above the engine oil pressure one.

I can’t order the part until Tuesday. Hopefully it will last another few days, l think it’s been leaking a while.
