How low is too low?

  172 Cup (2003)
Hello there,

I've never modified any car whatsoever...although since there is such extensive knowledge here on Cliosport, i think i may be given good enough advice to make my first mod. (well pay someone to do it for me i mean)

The first thing i was considering doing was lowering it (My 172 Cup PH2).

I want the lowering to have a practical use by improving the handling of the car, i don't want the lowering for cosmetic purposes. Hence the title of the thread. I'm also not keen on spending a huge amount on doing so.

So firstly, what is the optimum combination of lowering kit and mm drop to increase handling? and secondly, do you have a rough idea of cost + fitting?

All input will be greatly appreciated :D

keep it VERY VERY minimal (25mm) and go for coilovers if u can afford.

for info, I actually measured wheelarch clearance on a 172 cup before deciding how far to drop my non-RS model - 40mm gave a fraction more than standard 172 cup.

  Turbos.
Wrong forum to ask for suspension advice imo.

If i wanted to get my Clio set up for harder use, say trackdays, i would probably go to someone like Mark Fish Motorsport who campaign Clios in various race series'. They have the knowledge and experience needed.

Everyone on here will simply say "Buy H&R!"

What kind of roads do you normally drive on?
If you track it a lot then a set of fully adjustable coilovers set up properly will do the trick and you can go pretty low.
If you spend most of your time on public roads i don't think overall you will beat original set up or ride height.
The only reason i want my car lowered again is for looks but as far as handling goes can't beat the oe.

eibach sportilines will do you nicley, hardly any drop, but a quality spring, and will tighten the handling up nicely

And Eibach Pro-kit for even less drop (10mm) and less harsh ride, but still great handling.... right?

About £140 for springs + 1 hour for fitting.

ah, might have been the pro i meant, i had them, and the car didnt even look lowered, but the handling was spot on.

Think im going to get the pros as im after better handling but still want practicality. Being a non cup i might notice it more hopefully.

I'm mostly on public roads, but i've come from an MR2 Mark2, which has incredible handling...really firm, but i find the 172 rolls more than i'd like in corners (in comparison) and round roundabouts. I want something to stiffen it up a little.

I know i'll never have it handling like an MR2 though...

That aside, thanks for the help folks.

just stuck pro lines on mine along with some new renault shocks and the difference in ride and handling is amazing. Ride is a lot better as well.
