  Whichever has fuel
Asking people to post about their problems?? That is only going to give you a one way response mate.

well when i bought mine back in march 07,i paid £2000 when even the cheapest was £2700 or so, and i knew it needed a bit of work, which i shrugged off as it was cheap, i ended up replacing the n/s window regulator, the exhaust and all engine mounts, but bearing in mind iv done over 25000 miles in her now iv only spent £700, and most of that was on stuff i wanted rather than needed

I found my mk1 172 started to cost quite a bit when it hit the 70k mark.

Big 72k service, cambelt, brakes [discs & pads] alternator, driveshafts, wiper motors etc.

I bought my Clio knowing it will break down, 1 month the window regulator snaps and 3 months after I bought it the powersteering pump fails. Just life, if you want reliability then buy a new VW or Toyota.

If your in the know there should be absolutley nothing wrong with it - i.e

1. Making sure all Relevant paper work is present

2. A good inspection of the bodywork will give a rough idea as to how shes been treated and what kind of life shes had.

3. Panel Alignment, this can throw people. The HPI might come back as no crash damage but could just have easily been (tree'd) and taken to a garage without informing the insurance company. I suggest taking a standard ruler and measuring up panels on each side, also a paint depth reader can be a dead give away to whats been sprayed and what it was when left the factory.

4. Take someone whos mechanically competent and knows what there talking about.

5. Even if there are things that your not happy with, this could be used as a means of haggaling, you never know you might get a bargain.

6. Definatley dont go yourself, the car might seem better than it actualy is (the excitement normally shadows what your really looking at)

Hope this helps mate, but these are simple know-hows in used car buying

yeah i would second that mate, u need to take someone in the know, i would never buy a car otherwise there are too many tricks to hide probs mate. if u dont know anyone get AA or RAC to check, it costs but saves the heartache in long run.
