How stupid are these quotes!

  Golf GTI 1.8T
Phoned my inurance (Tesco) to get quotes for mods I'm about to do. As follows
Add Mk1 172 Alloys worth £150 = £133
Add K&N air filter with a 0-1% power increase = £182
Add Lower Suspension 60mm est. at £250 = £132
Add mother to the policy = £58

Personally I thought the suspension wasn't too bad, but the air filter which will have little if no effect to my power (I just want some roar). And if I had added my mum to the policy when taking it out it would have been cheaper, whats with that!?!

Mr Insurance man I bought the car with those alloys, how was I not to know they aren't standard to this model??

Just been sorting my insurrance today on my 182.

With coilovers, sports cat, cams, exhaust, standalone ECU, IK, Cable throttle body, inlet manifold work, worked out at approx 300£ extra.

Thats in the upto 10% power increase bracket (could be pushing it there but how could they prove it?) and upto £1000 of exterior mods (coilovers). I am 29 with full NCB I think my policy is approx £780 on a 182 with these mods which I was surprised at.

Those prices do seem to be taking the piss. How old are you?

count yourself lucky mate, thats a lot of cash you've put into it so £300 to insure all that extra dont seem too bad to me.

  Clio 172mk2
cost me 40 quid on my policy to add

coilovers , viper , full ,magnex cat back

thats with adrian flux

I dont need a new insurer, my policy is till may, but at the time it was the cheapest I could find, I waited till I was 18 and had pass pluss together they knocked off £600. I won't be going back with Tesco though.

reason is, is that Tesco don't like insuring cars with mods. They think that if they have extortiate prices to add mods mods to a policy it will scare people off. And if you read the small print of the policy Im sure it will say that even if they do cover the mods, the policy will only a 'standard for modified' policy. This means in english that if you make a claim they will only replace the modified parts with OE parts.

  Golf GTI 1.8T
Thats fine by me, but surely it shouldn't be any extra if they only have to replace with OE stuff. bloody wierdos!

Idea being if your clio pulls into a car park sounding like a beast with it's roaring K&N, etc... it's more likely to attract chavs...

...also, if ur fitting an induction kit, it also pigeon holes you as a "fast" driver...

Also the likelihood of cost cutting when fitting modifications - could result in a higher risk of failure causing damage to others.

I am not a chav, nor is my car. Everything I'm doing to it is tasteful, the k&n is mainly to make it sound better when I'm pulling hard and not rolling round car parks lol. Not sure what its gonna sound like so might not even stay on there. But I can see why insurance companies dont like them (or maybe they do £$£) but its every 17yr olds first mod.

I had a K&N on my 1.4... was on for 1 week before I realised how stupid it sounded.

It's not because anyone thinks your a chav mate it's just that it attracts attention to your car and is therefor more likely to be damaged/stolen and any sort of engine mod give the impression to the i...nsurance company that your more likely to be the boy racer type at your age.

I would say either make do without the mods till your insurance runs out or find out about canceling the policy (you should be able to get most of your money back on a pro rata basis) and try elephant or bell for insurance.

woohoo - 900 posts!!!! :D (I should really get out more  )

Really?? Well I'm gonna have to wait and see for myself. Yeah I can understand that it could attract attention but I won't be going round town blipping my accelerator. And with clios being so common I doubt it will stand out at all, they'd rather go for something like my mates Fiesta Si which I woooped the other night down the A120, god those things are so de-tuned!! Plus he has, air filter, full stanless magnex, and chipped. lol

I wasnt saying you were a chav, _I_ have an induction kit! I was just saying if a lowered car pulls into a car park where there are some chavs drinking cider or whatever they do... they'll be more interested in nicking ur motor!

I think the K&N on the 1.4 sounds nice, it's no different at all if u dont floor it, but if u floor it, it sounds tastefully throaty, without sounding like a stupid powerflow...
