How to drive it?

Later today I'm going to pick up my new 182, it has a few little issues,a misfire at idle and a chequered belt history(done recently but by a non specialist), I've booked it in with Birchdown next week but need to get it 50 miles home first without the engine going bang(this happened with my last RS 5 years ago), so any tips? Best sat at 56mph in 5th down the motorway or better driving it normally?

Any tips on how to get it home in one piece are appreciated.

Cheers!

Tow it if you want true piece of mind imo.

It tends to be the aux belt that fails (and then takes out the cambelt), so you could inspect that before going out and if you drive it just drive carefully, but if it's going to go then it's going to go!

Tow it is the only way to be worry free, if ur not towing it just drive it normally and dont worry about it, it it happens it happens, you would be very, very unlucky if it happened again to you!!

Pretty much as above. If it's going to go pop the speed won't help or not stopping it.

Did you get it super cheap? Most people who have anything to do with this forum know not to get an RS with a sketchy belt history especially if last done by a non specialist! You with the AA? I've used them in past to "relay" my car to a garage when I wasn't confident driving it.

Avoid arduous driving conditions so start stop and sharp acceleration and it'll be most likely to survive. You'd be unlucky if it was to self destruct in that 50 miles unless it is a properly sketchy belt job.

You can hire 3.5ton car transporters for a reasonable amount if like me you don't have grandad rights to tow much but can still drive vans on your basic licence. They will carry up to 1.5 tons normally.

Try searching in your area there might be a company near you.

I did get it super cheap and a great spec so the plan is to get the belt done and have a cracking car, just need to get to the belt change without drama. Cheers folks.

If it runs then just drive it. It's not like the belts were swapped yesterday so any damage would have already occurred.

But as it has a misfire I would be more concerned on the fuel entering the cat rather than the belts playing havoc.

Got it home! Few little issues to sort like a strange wind whistle and a drone that sounded like a flat tyre but isn't from the front left but I'm just glad it's back in one piece.

That might be the windscreen. The seals out of the factory were pap, iirc.

Thanks folks, wheel bearing was my first thought too when I got home, the car pulls towards that side ever so slightly too which would add up. This looks like what I need?

As for the screen making the noise that would make sense, the other thing I've read is about a hole for a sensor in the mirror mount so I'll tape over it and go for a run out. Having looked at the aux belt it looks in decent nick, I know that doesnt necessarily mean much but it's not visibly knackered at least.

I'm going to get a project thread started this afternoon with pics.
